Evaluation of nasal mucociliary functions with rhinoscintigraphy in coal workers' pneumoconiosis.
To compare nasal mucociliary clearance (NMC) functions in coal workers with pneumoconiosis, coal workers without pneumoconiosis and healthy controls by using technetium-99m-labeled macroaggregated albumin rhinoscintigraphy. ⋯ Our findings demonstrated a synergistic detrimental effect of smoking with coal dust exposure on nasal transport time.

Nystagmus measured with video-oculography: methodological aspects and normative data.
Detailed analysis of eye movements is essential in order to understand the pathophysiology underlying vestibular disturbances. We applied a commercial video-oculography (VOG) to measure spontaneous and provoked nystagmus in 20 healthy subjects. The slow-phase velocity (SPV) of the nystagmus was calculated. ⋯ Spontaneous nystagmus was seen in 20%, positional nystagmus in 55%, and head-shaking nystagmus in 35% of the participants. Although nystagmus was frequent (85%), the mean SPV for nystagmus was low (1.7 degrees /s). The VOG is a modern and sensitive method to record eye movements, but visual inspection of the videotape may be needed in selected cases to confirm occurrence of nystagmus.

Case ReportsManagement of chyle fistula utilizing thoracoscopic ligation of the thoracic duct.
To document the treatment of refractory chyle leaks using thoracoscopic thoracic duct ligation and provide systematic guidelines to manage chyle leaks. ⋯ Initial treatment of chyle fistula is aimed at conservative medical management. Persistent high-output fistulas (>500 cm(3)) should be considered for neck reexploration as conservative management is likely to fail. Thoracoscopic thoracic duct ligation provides a safe and efficient means of treating chyle leaks refractory to repeated surgical and medical intervention. It should also be considered as a primary surgical intervention for patients with: (1) chyle output exceeding 500 cm(3)/day where prior intraoperative attempts at ligation have failed, (2) severe metabolic and nutritional complications, (3) coexisting chylothorax with respiratory compromise, and (4) low-output fistulas (<500 cm(3)/day) of long duration (>14 days).

Case ReportsMultiple synchronous fibrovascular polyps of the hypopharynx.
To evaluate the clinical, radiological presentation and surgical management of fibrovascular polyps of the hypopharynx. ⋯ Fibrovascular polyps are rare benign intraluminal esophageal lesions resulting in mild symptoms of dysphagia that may also cause significant morbidity such as syncope and asphyxia. This is the first report of synchronous fibrovascular polyps of the hypopharynx.

Case ReportsAncient schwannoma of the true vocal cord.
Ancient schwannomas are benign nerve origin neoplasms that may cause difficulties in the differential diagnosis with other benign or malignant tumors. They usually occur in the head and neck region (epiglottis, arytenoepiglottic fold, false vocal cord). Involvement of the true vocal cords is extremely rare (less than 10 cases have ever been reported in the English literature--mainly in women). ⋯ During microlaryngoscopy under general anesthesia, the polypoidal mass was removed and sent for histology. Immunohistochemistry and detailed histological examination revealed an ancient schwannoma. The present case in a male patient aims to increase awareness of the possibility that these tumors may also exist in the true vocal cords mimicking other more frequent lesions.
