The influence of previous viral symptoms on the level and duration of human milk antibodies reactive to SARS-CoV-2, and common human coronaviruses (HCoVs) was investigated. ⋯ Previous viral symptoms and individual mothers may change the antibody cross-reactive levels to SARS-CoV-2 and HCoVs in human milk.

International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes in electronic health records (EHRs) are increasingly used for health services research, in spite of unknown diagnostic accuracy. The accuracy of ICD codes to identify bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is unknown. ⋯ ICD codes registered for BPD are unlikely to accurately reflect the current clinical definition and should be interpreted with caution.

This study evaluated the presence and the levels of antibodies reactive to SARS-CoV-2 S1 and S2 subunits (S1 + S2), and nucleocapsid protein. ⋯ The presence of SARS-CoV-2-reactive antibodies in human milk could provide passive immunity to breastfed infants and protect them against COVID-19 diseases.

The phrase "I can't breathe" has become a national slogan in recent months for those who are protesting against racial discrimination across the world. For clinicians caring for neonates, this phrase should serve as a reminder about the stark disparities in health outcomes and health services for black infants and their families that have persisted for decades in spite of a voluminous amount of literature describing these disparities and the factors contributing to them. It should galvanize us into action within the neonatal intensive care unit and beyond to ensure equal treatment for all patients and their families, and to take measures to compensate for the disparities.

Early assessment of lung aeration using an ultrasound score as a biomarker of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia: a prospective observational study.
The objective of this study was to assess the predictive value of a lung ultrasound (LUS) score in the development of moderate-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (sBPD). This was a prospective observational diagnostic accuracy study in a third-level neonatal intensive care unit. Preterm infants with a gestational age below 32 weeks were included. ⋯ The LUS on the 7th DOL had an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.94 (95% CI: 0.87-1) for the prediction of sBPD (optimal cutoff of ≥8 points: sensitivity 93%, specificity 91%). The LUS score was independently associated with sBPD [OR 2.1 (95% CI: 1.1-3.9), p = 0.022, for each additional point in the score]. Conclusions: Lung aeration as assessed by LUS on the 7th DOL may predict the development of sBPD.
