To characterize the rate of monitoring alarms by alarm priority, signal type, and developmental age in a Level-IIIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) population. ⋯ The alarm burden in this NICU population is very significant; the average alarm rate significantly underrepresents alarm rates at low and high PMA and BW. Virtually all critical arrhythmia alarms were artifactual.

A randomized controlled trial: does coaching using video during direct laryngoscopy improve residents' success in neonatal intubations?
To evaluate the intubation success rates of residents who receive coaching from supervisors concurrently viewing infants' airways via video during direct laryngoscopy (VDL), as compared with coaching during traditional direct laryngoscopy without video (TDL). ⋯ Resident coaching using VDL improved neonatal intubation success rates. Incorporating VDL as a coaching tool can optimize the quality of training during limited opportunities to achieve procedural competency and improve intubation-related patient outcomes.

To determine the implications of supplemental vitamin C for pregnant tobacco smokers and its effects on the prevalence of pediatric asthma, asthma-related mortality, and associated costs. ⋯ Vitamin C supplementation in pregnant smokers is a safe and inexpensive intervention that may reduce the economic burden of pediatric asthma.

Packed red blood cells transfusion in neonates: effect on FiO2 and PaO2/SaO2 ratio, and implications for neonatal saturation targeting.
To assess the effect of blood transfusions in neonates on partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood (PaO2), arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SaO2) and arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximetry (SpO2). ⋯ Post-transfusion, neonates had lower hemoglobin oxygen affinity. They received higher FiO2 and had higher PaO2 at the same SpO2. We speculate that FiO2 was increased in order to maintain SpO2. Larger prospective trials are needed to confirm our findings.

Rapid resolution of hyperammonemia in neonates using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as a platform to drive hemodialysis.
We aimed to clarify the impact of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a platform to drive hemodialysis (HD) for ammonia clearance on outcomes of neonates with severe hyperammonemia. ⋯ ECMO/HD is an effective adjunct to rapidly clear severe hyperammonemia in newborns, reducing potential neurodevelopmental morbidity.
