One representative case of burns caused by the negligent use of bioethanol, which was treated at our burns centre is used to illustrate the severity and depth of the burn injuries as well as the complexity of the further long-term course of treatment including complex secondary-reconstructive techniques.

Type II fractures of the odontoid process of the axis are the most common injury of the cervical spine in elderly patients. Only little evidence exists on whether elderly patients should be treated conservatively or surgically. ⋯ Fractures of the odontoid process pose a far-reaching danger for elderly patients. A balanced assessment of the general condition should be carried out at the beginning of treatment of these patients. In the early phase following trauma no differences were found with respect to survival rates but for long-term survival the operatively treated group showed advantages; however, these advantages cannot be causally attributed to the choice of therapy.

An implant used for stabilizing a fracture creates a mechanical construct, which directly determines the biology of bone healing. The stabilization of fractures places high mechanical demands on implants and therefore steel and titanium are currently almost exclusively used as the materials of choice. ⋯ An essential prerequisite for the secondary fracture healing is an appropriate mechanobiological environment, which can be controlled by the osteosynthesis material and the configuration and is also affected by the type of fracture and load.

An approximately 25-year-old skier collided in a ski-run intersection. At high speed, he first hit another skier and then smashed into a snow cannon. He died from his injuries a short time later in hospital. ⋯ The detailed analysis was the result of the combination of the two methods of investigation, CT scan and autopsy. The methods complemented each other effectively and allowed for a detailed presentation of the injury pattern. In conjunction with the additional analytical accident report, this combination of CT scan and autopsy contributes towards a reconstruction of accidents and the development of prevention measures and related protective systems.

Case Reports
[Atypical subtrochanteric femur fracture under alendronate therapy in spite of an intramedullar implant].
There are a number of case reports about women undergoing long-term bisphosphonate therapy who have suffered an atypical subtrochanteric or femoral shaft fracture due to an inadequate trauma. The present case reports on a patient who underwent a subtrochanteric femur fracture with the inserted AO femur interlocking nail.
