Controlled Clinical TrialA quasi-experimental trial on individualized, developmentally supportive family-centered care.
To evaluate the impact of individualized, developmentally supportive family-centered care on infant physiological variables, growth, behavioral stress cues, return to sleep state, medical and developmental progress, complications, resource utilization, parental perception of the neonatal intensive-care unit experience, and overall parental satisfaction. ⋯ Preterm infants who received developmentally supportive family-centered care demonstrated fewer behavioral stress cues and comparable short-term outcomes and resource utilization than infants who received routine care.

Comparative StudyUmbilical cord care: a pilot study comparing topical human milk, povidone-iodine, and dry care.
To compare the incidence of omphalitis among three groups, each using a different type of newborn cord care: povidone-iodine, dry care, and topical human milk. ⋯ The cultural practice of applying human milk to the umbilical cord stump appears to have no adverse effects and is associated with shorter cord separation times than are seen with the use of antiseptics.

Personal digital assistants, wireless computing, smart cards, and biometrics: a hardware update for clinical practice.
This paper introduces current and future information technology tools for health care with a focus on perinatal and women's health areas of nursing. The technologies include personal digital assistants, wireless computing, smart cards, biometrics, and storage cards. Strategies to incorporate these applications into practice are discussed.
