Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyA Test of Kangaroo Care on Preterm Infant Breastfeeding.
To test the effects of kangaroo care (KC) on breastfeeding outcomes in preterm infants compared with two control groups and to explore whether maternal-infant characteristics and the mother's choice to use KC were related to breastfeeding measures. ⋯ As implemented in this study, assignment to the KC group did not appear to influence the measured breastfeeding outcomes.

Experiences of Nurses Who Care for Women After Fetal Loss.
To examine the experiences of, meaning for, and personal consequences for obstetric, emergency, and surgical nurses caring for women after fetal death and to determine how these nurses use Swanson's caring processes in providing such care. ⋯ Obstetric nurses provided relatively equal focus on all processes in the Theory of Caring except Maintaining Belief. Surgical and emergency department nurses focused primarily on the caring processes of Knowing and Doing For. The negative feelings reported by nurses mirror some emotions commonly associated with compassion fatigue. More research is needed to determine whether nurses caring for mothers experiencing fetal loss are at risk for compassion fatigue. Research is also needed to identify strategies and interventions to help nurses so they may continue to give the best care possible to these very vulnerable families without detriment to themselves.

Observational StudyInterrater Reliability Testing of the Maternal Fetal Triage Index.
To conduct interrater reliability testing of the Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI), a standardized tool for obstetric triage. ⋯ The interrater reliability of the MFTI met the minimum strength of agreement threshold goal of 0.60 when used by nurses in a large birth unit to assign priority for evaluation. Based on this finding, the MFTI can be recommended for use in obstetric triage settings. Additional testing should be done to measure how this standardized tool improves care processes and outcomes.

A Continuous Quality Improvement Project to Implement Infant-Driven Feeding as a Standard of Practice in the Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit.
To increase the number of neonates who were fed according to cues prior to discharge and potentially decrease length of stay. ⋯ Neonates who are fed according to cues can become successful oral feeders and can be safely discharged home regardless of gestational age or diagnosis.

Why Infant Formula Samples Pose a Risk to Health Care Providers, Hospitals, and Patients.
Distribution of infant formula samples to new mothers prior to hospital discharge has been an engrained practice on maternity units since the early 20(th) century. Although appearing to be innocuous, this practice is fraught with potential unwanted side effects of which patients and providers are unaware. Receipt of formula samples by breastfeeding mothers is a marketing tactic that adversely affects breastfeeding duration and exclusivity and places the nurse at risk for responsibility for adverse outcomes.
