To review the current status, recent advances and ongoing research efforts related to screening, diagnosis and staging, and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ⋯ An understanding of treatment modalities and new therapies for NSCLC will help nurses assist patients to make educated decisions about the potential risks and benefits of their therapeutic options.

To review current approaches to primary prevention of lung cancer and to screening for precarcinogenic or preclinical asymptomatic disease. ⋯ Nurses are in a strategic position to prevent smoking initiation and to influence successful smoking cessation through education, information on the multiple modalities to assist behavioral change, and ongoing reinforcement.

To review major events in cigarette marketing and smoking practices, and to examine courses of action that can be taken by nurses to impact public health and safety. ⋯ Any nurse can take positive action toward tobacco control in numerous ways: by increasing awareness of the need for tobacco control; initiating personal action such as education and contacting legislators; and supporting public action through joining groups or coalitions whose efforts are directed at tobacco control.
