Introduce and validate a novel, fast, and fully automated deep learning pipeline (FatSegNet) to accurately identify, segment, and quantify visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT and SAT) within a consistent, anatomically defined abdominal region on Dixon MRI scans. ⋯ FatSegNet generalizes well to different body shapes, sensitively replicates known VAT and SAT volume effects in a large cohort study and permits localized analysis of fat compartments. Furthermore, it can reliably analyze a 3D Dixon MRI in ∼1 minute, providing an efficient and validated pipeline for abdominal adipose tissue analysis in the Rhineland Study.

To develop a high-scanning efficiency, motion-corrected imaging strategy for free-breathing pulmonary MRI by combining an iterative motion-compensation reconstruction with a ultrashort echo time (UTE) acquisition called iMoCo UTE. ⋯ The proposed iMoCo UTE combines self-navigation, motion modeling, and a compressed sensing reconstruction to increase scan efficiency and SNR and to reduce respiratory motion in lung MRI. This proposed strategy shows improvements in free-breathing lung MRI scans, especially in very challenging application situations such as pediatric MRI studies.

To use golden-angle radial sampling and compressed sensing (CS) for accelerating mono- and biexponential 3D spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame (T1ρ ) mapping of knee cartilage. ⋯ Golden-angle radial acquisitions combined with CS outperformed Cartesian acquisitions for 3D-T1ρ mapping of knee cartilage, being it is a good alternative to Cartesian sampling for reducing scan time and/or improving image and mapping quality. The methods exponential decay models, spatio-temporal finite differences, and low rank obtained the best results for radial sampling patterns.

To demonstrate simultaneous T1 -weighted imaging, T1 mapping, R 2 ∗ mapping, SWI, and QSM from a single multi-echo (ME) MP2RAGE acquisition. ⋯ High-resolution structural T1 weighted imaging, T1 mapping, R 2 ∗ mapping, SWI, and QSM can be extracted from a single 8.5-min ME-MP2RAGE acquisition using a customized reconstruction pipeline. This method can be applied to replace separate SE-MP2RAGE and ME-gradient echo acquisitions to significantly shorten total scan time.

To evaluate different T2 -oxygenation calibrations for estimating venous oxygenation in people with sickle cell anemia (SCA). ⋯ Our results confirm that sickle blood T2 values not only depend on the hematocrit and oxygenation values, but also on other hematological factors. The individual T2 calibrations minimized the effect of heterogeneity of sickle blood between different SCA populations and improved the accuracy of T2 -based oximetry. The measured oxygen extraction fraction and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen of this group of SCA participants were found to not differ significantly from those of healthy individuals.
