Simultaneous multislice (SMS) imaging can significantly increase image acquisition rates and improve temporal resolution and contrast in gradient-echo blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional MRI (fMRI) experiments. Through-plane signal loss due to B(0) inhomogeneities at air-tissue interfaces limits fMRI of structures near the nasal cavity and ear canals. This study implemented spectral-spatial (SPSP) radiofrequency pulses for reduced through-plane signal loss across multiple simultaneously excited slices. ⋯ It is demonstrated that SPSP-SMS pulses can improve BOLD sensitivity in areas of signal loss across simultaneous multiple slices.

To reduce the specific-absorption-rate (SAR) and chemical shift displacement (CSD) of three-dimensional (3D) Hadamard spectroscopic imaging (HSI) and maintain its point spread function (PSF) benefits. ⋯ The new hybrid HSI sequence offers a better localized PSF at reduced CSD and SAR at 3T. The short and variable TE permits acquisition of short T2 and J-coupled metabolites with higher SNR.

The sophisticated harmonic artifact reduction for phase data (SHARP) method has been proposed for the removal of background field in MRI phase data. It relies on the spherical mean value (SMV) property of harmonic functions, and its accuracy depends on the radius of the sphere used for computing the SMV and truncation threshold needed for deconvolution. The goal of this study was to develop an alternative SMV-based background field removal method with reduced dependences on these parameters. ⋯ The iSMV method is an effective background field removal method with a reduced dependence on method parameters. Arterial partial-volume effects (PVEs) often hamper reproducible absolute quantification of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) obtained by dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI (DSC-MRI). The aim of this study was to examine whether arterial PVEs in DSC-MRI data can be minimized by rescaling the arterial input function (AIF) using a sagittal-sinus venous output function obtained following a prebolus administration of a low dose of contrast agent. ⋯ Quantitative estimates of CBF and CBV, obtained with the proposed prebolus DSC-MRI technique, approached those typically obtained by other perfusion modalities. The CBF and CBV estimates showed good repeatability.

During MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy, ultrasound absorption in the near field represents a safety risk and limits efficient energy deposition at the target. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of using T2 mapping to monitor the temperature change in subcutaneous adipose tissue layers. ⋯ The reversibility and linearity of the T2 -temperature dependence of adipose tissue allows for the monitoring of the temperature in the subcutaneous adipose tissue layers.
