Comparative StudyPrediction of human breast and colon cancers from imbalanced data using nearest neighbor and support vector machines.
This study proposes a novel prediction approach for human breast and colon cancers using different feature spaces. The proposed scheme consists of two stages: the preprocessor and the predictor. In the preprocessor stage, the mega-trend diffusion (MTD) technique is employed to increase the samples of the minority class, thereby balancing the dataset. ⋯ To the best of our knowledge, the reported results are the best results, so far, for these datasets. The proposed scheme indicates that the developed models can be used as a tool for the prediction of cancer. This scheme may be useful for study of any sequential information such as protein sequence or any nucleic acid sequence.

Mechanical ventilation and thoracic artificial lung assistance during mechanical circulatory support with PUCA pump: in silico study.
Patients assisted with left ventricular assist device (LVAD) may require prolonged mechanical ventilatory assistance secondary to postoperative respiratory failure. The goal of this work is the study of the interdependent effects LVAD like pulsatile catheter (PUCA) pump and mechanical ventilatory support or thoracic artificial lung (TAL), by the hemodynamic point of view, using a numerical simulator of the human cardiovascular system. In the simulator, different circulatory sections are described using lumped parameter models. ⋯ By switching "OFF" the PUCA pump, it seems that parallel thoracic artificial lung assistance produces a greater cardiac output (respect to hybrid TAL assistance). Results concerning PUCA and TAL interaction produced by simulations cannot be compared with "in vivo" results since they are not presented in literature. But results concerning the effects produced by LVAD and mechanical ventilation have a trend consistent with those presented in literature.

Local identifiability and sensitivity analysis of neuromuscular blockade and depth of hypnosis models.
This paper addresses the local identifiability and sensitivity properties of two classes of Wiener models for the neuromuscular blockade and depth of hypnosis, when drug dose profiles like the ones commonly administered in the clinical practice are used as model inputs. The local parameter identifiability was assessed based on the singular value decomposition of the normalized sensitivity matrix. ⋯ The results show that the majority of the model parameters are identifiable from the available input-output data. This indicates that any identification strategy based on the minimally parameterized parsimonious Wiener models for the neuromuscular blockade and for the depth of hypnosis is likely to be more successful than if standard models are used.

External fixator configurations in tibia fractures: 1D optimization and 3D analysis comparison.
The use of external fixation devices in orthopedic surgery is very common in open tibial fractures. A properly applied fixator may improve the healing process while one improperly applied might delay the healing process. The several external fixator systems used in clinical today, can be categorized into uniplanar-unilateral, uniplanar-bilateral, biplanar and multiplanar. ⋯ The 3D comparison of the 1D optimal results show a clear improvement on the objective function for the several load cases and, therefore, it is shown that appropriate selection of the external fixator geometrical features can lead to an improvement on the stability of the external fixator. The results obtained show that the optimal position of the side beam and the first pin should be as close as possible to the bone interface and as close as possible to the fracture focus, respectively. Concerning the second pin, it should be placed away from the first pin in case of flexion loads, to axial and torsion loads the second pin should be placed near the first pin.

The application of support vector regression for prediction of the antiallodynic effect of drug combinations in the mouse model of streptozocin-induced diabetic neuropathy.
Drug interactions are an important issue of efficacious and safe pharmacotherapy. Although the use of drug combinations carries the potential risk of enhanced toxicity, when carefully introduced it enables to optimize the therapy and achieve pharmacological effects at doses lower than those of single agents. ⋯ Based on SVR the most effective doses of co-administered LPP1 (4mg/kg) and PGB (1mg/kg) were predicted to cause the paw withdrawal threshold at 6.7g in the von Frey test. In vivo for the same combination of doses the paw withdrawal was observed at 6.5g, which confirms good predictive properties of SVR.
