Computer acquisition and analysis of skin temperature and heat flow data from heat flux transducers.
A computer-controlled system for the collection and analysis of skin temperature and heat flow data originating from an array of heat flux transducers is described. The system is based on a program ('THERMAL') that reads, stores, prints and displays skin temperatures and heat flow data every 2 min for up to 4 h. It also simultaneously calculates important environmental physiology parameters such as mean skin and mean body temperatures as well as mean heat flow according to four different combinations of transducers such as the established 3-, 4-, 7- and 12-point (site) formulae. Core temperature, heart rate and environmental condition indices such as dry bulb, wet bulb and globe temperatures are also continuously monitored.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialComputerized management of patient care in a complex, controlled clinical trial in the intensive care unit.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is often not responsive to conventional supportive therapy and the mortality rate may exceed 90%. A new form of supportive care, extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R), has shown a dramatic increase in survival (48%). A controlled clinical trial of the new ECCO2R therapy versus conventional continuous positive pressure ventilation (CPPV) is being initiated. ⋯ Using a blackboard control architecture, the protocols have been implemented on an existing hospital information system and will direct patient care and help manage the controlled clinical trial. Therapeutic instructions are automatically generated by the computer from data input by physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and the laboratory. Preliminary results show that the computerized protocol system can direct therapy for acutely ill patients.

CONFREG: a BASIC program for calculating and plotting confidence regions based on correlational analyses.
Many observations encountered in biological and medical research are randomly distributed in bivariate scales, and thus not susceptible to simple regression analyses. Since such data are depicted by ellipses in scatter diagrams, a computer program to calculate the confidence regions for the means or the total data of bivariate samples was written in BASIC for correlational analyses. The program, based on the principal axes algorithm, plots the calculated confidence regions as an elliptic area, using the fitted equations for its major and minor axes. The program displays the sample parameters required to perform comparisons between different groups of experimental conditions.

A combination of transparent pictorial overlays with conventional computer displays, and a simple program, provides a very effective method of teaching and reviewing anatomy.
