The aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the influence of OPRM1 polymorphism on the analgesic efficacy (including visual analog scale [VAS] scores and requirement for rescue analgesia) of a standard dose of intrathecal morphine. ⋯ In the Italian population participating in this study there was a different incidence of pruritus in the postcesarean period in response to intrathecal opioids related to OPRM1 gene polymorphism, but not of postoperative pain.

Association between Clinical and Neurophysiological Outcomes in Patients with Mechanical Neck Pain and Whiplash-associated Disorders.
To investigate the association between pain, disability, trigger points (TrPs), and pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) in patients with mechanical neck pain (MNP) or whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). ⋯ The association between pain, disability, and PPTs is common in patients with neck pain regardless of the origin of neck pain. The presence of active TrPs was related to higher pain intensity and related-disability and lower PPTs.

A clinical protocol was developed for clinicians to routinely assess and initiate treatment for patients with neuropathic pain (NP) in an acute care setting. The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine the incidence and onset of NP in patients with traumatic spinal cord injury during acute care and (2) describe how the implementation of a clinical protocol impacts the assessment and diagnosis of NP. ⋯ This study demonstrates a high incidence and early onset of NP in traumatic spinal cord injury during acute hospital care, with an earlier emergence in participants with incomplete injury. The NP clinical protocol ensured continuous assessment and documentation of NP while decreasing the time to an initial screen, but did not impact diagnosis.

The aims of this study were to examine the relationship between fear of movement and activity levels in people with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) over the first 3 months postinjury, to determine the mediating effect of: fear of movement on the relationship between catastrophizing and activity levels, and activity levels on the relationship between fear of movement and disability in patients with WAD. ⋯ Our data suggests measures of Fear Avoidance Model are not related to general physical activity in people with WAD. Investigation of movements specific to the cervical spine and alternative explanatory models may be required.
