The role of the opioid OxyContin in the opioid abuse epidemic has been well documented. In 2010, OxyContin was reformulated to make it more difficult to abuse. We assessed past-year OxyContin nonmedical use among a nationally representative population and among nonmedical users of opioid pain relievers in the United States between 2006 and 2013. ⋯ The prevalence of past-year OxyContin nonmedical use in 2013, 3 years after reformulation, was significantly lower than the prevalence in the reformulation year, but similar to other years before and after reformulation. The prevalence of OxyContin nonmedical use among nonmedical users of pain relievers was higher than or similar to historical prevalence rates before reformulation. Groups with increased odds of OxyContin nonmedical use were similar before and after reformulation.

Preoperative but Not Postoperative Flurbiprofen Axetil Alleviates Remifentanil Induced Hyperalgesia after Laparoscopic Gynecological Surgery: A Prospective, Randomized, Double-blinded, Trial.
Acute remifentanil exposure during intraoperative analgesia might enhance sensitivity to noxious stimuli and nociceptive responses to innocuous irritation. Cyclooxygenase inhibition was demonstrated to attenuate experimental remifentanil-induced hyperalgesia (RIH) in rodents and human volunteers. The study aimed to compare the effects of preoperative and postoperative flurbiprofen axetil (FA) on RIH after surgery. ⋯ Preoperative FA reduces postoperative RIH in patients undergoing laparoscopic gynecologic surgery under sevoflurane-remifentanil anesthesia.

To determine pressure pain detection threshold (PPDT) related phenotypes of individuals with mechanical neck pain that may be identifiable in clinical practice. ⋯ The results suggest that there are a large proportion of people with neck pain that present with signs indicating dysfunction beyond the local tissues. Ongoing exploration of these presentations may lead to more informed management and improved outcomes.
