The present study investigated whether illness cognitions mediated the relationship between caregiving demands and positive and negative indicators of adjustment in partners of patients with chronic pain. ⋯ The results suggest that illness cognitions play an important role in the psychological adjustment of partners. Enhancing acceptance of the illness and reducing feelings of helplessness could form the basis of interventions aiming at promoting psychological adjustment in partners, especially when it is difficult to reduce the demands.

Randomized Controlled Trial
A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Virtual Reality Distraction to Reduce Procedural Pain During Subcutaneous Port Access in Children with Cancer.
We aimed to determine the feasibility of virtual reality (VR) distraction for children with cancer undergoing subcutaneous port (SCP) access. We also aimed to estimate preliminary treatment effects of VR compared with an active distraction control (iPad). ⋯ VR was feasible and acceptable to implement as an intervention during SCP access. Preliminary effectiveness results indicate that VR may reduce distress and distress compared with iPad distraction. These data will inform design of a future full-scale randomized controlled trial.

Despite high prevalence estimates, chronic low back pain (CLBP) remains poorly understood among older adults. Movement-evoked pain (MeP) is an understudied factor in this population that may importantly contribute to disability. This study investigated whether a novel MeP paradigm contributed to self-reported and performance-based function in older adults with CLBP. ⋯ Aggregated posttest MeP independently contributed to worse self-reported and performance-based function among older adults with CLBP. To understand long-term consequences of MeP, future studies should examine longitudinal associations between MeP and function in this population.

The objective of this study was to synthesize the current evidence regarding the predictive ability of measures of physical function (PF) of the neck region and perceived PF on prognosis following a whiplash injury. ⋯ Although initial higher pain-related disability and higher WAD grade are associated with poor outcome, there is little evidence available investigating the role of neck PF on prognosis following a whiplash injury.

Chronic whiplash associated disorders (CWAD) are characterized by long-lasting symptoms of neck pain occurring after an acceleration-deceleration injury. Central sensitization (CS) has been suggested as the possible underlying mechanism for these symptoms, and is characterized by changes in the central nervous system. Besides CS, psychological factors are believed to play an important role in the experience of (chronic) pain. ⋯ QST outcomes relate to psychological constructs, rather than to self-reported pain intensity and distribution. Local hyperalgesia was found in individuals with CWAD, but no differences in endogenous pain facilitation nor inhibition.
