Health care access after injury by insurance type in a pediatric population.
Previous studies demonstrate discrepancies in health care access by insurance status for routine, discretionary care. It is unknown whether these discrepancies in health care utilization by insurance status persist in urgent/emergent circumstances. We used injury as a sentinel event to represent urgent/emergent medical conditions to examine the relationship with insurance type. ⋯ While controlling for potentially confounding variables, there was no relationship between type of insurance and only making a telephone call after an injury. However, uninsured children were significantly more likely to be hospitalized after an injury than insured children. This latter relationship differs from overall patterns of health care utilization by insurance type.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyLevalbuterol versus racemic albuterol in the treatment of acute exacerbation of asthma in children.
To compare levalbuterol and racemic albuterol for the treatment of acute exacerbation of asthma in pediatric population. ⋯ Levalbuterol is not more efficacious than racemic albuterol in improving respiratory parameters in children presenting with acute exacerbation of asthma.

Randomized Controlled TrialEvaluation of age-appropriate firearm safety interventions.
The purpose of this study was to determine if firearm safety training increased the knowledge of school-age children about gun safety. It was predicted that children's knowledge, attitudes, and feelings about firearm safety would be impacted by the method used to teach the key firearm safety constructs. The specific aim was to test the effects of 3 levels of firearm safety training on school-age children's knowledge about gun safety. The hypothesis was that children who attended a firearm injury prevention program that used a scripted discussion, psychomotor exercise, and a role-playing exercise about firearm safety would have greater knowledge about firearm safety. ⋯ This study provides evidence that children do retain firearm safety training. The long-term objective of this research is to reduce the incidence of firearm injuries during childhood by teaching children how to be safe around guns.

Pelvic inflammatory disease in adolescents: care delivery in pediatric ambulatory settings.
To evaluate care delivery patterns in patients treated for pelvic inflammatory disease in pediatric outpatient settings and to determine the effect of practice type on care delivery. ⋯ Many adolescents treated as outpatients for pelvic inflammatory disease may not receive adequate medications and instructions for self-care at discharge in pediatric ambulatory settings. This study suggests a need for aggressive quality improvement measures to enhance the care of adolescents with pelvic inflammatory disease in pediatric outpatient settings.
