A Cross-Sectional Study of Emergency Department Visits by Children After All-Terrain Vehicle Crashes, Motor Vehicle Crashes, and Sports Activities.
All-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes have been responsible for significant injuries among children, despite public education efforts. Our study examined pediatric ATV injury patterns in US emergency departments (EDs) compared with injuries after motor vehicle crash (MVC) and sports activities. ⋯ Pediatric ED visits after ATV crashes result in significant injuries and charges. Public health interventions such as education, legislation, and engineering are needed to reduce injuries among children and the subsequent ED visits for care. The impact of proven interventions may be greatest for children living in rural areas and among older children, 10 to 17 years old.

Marijuana Misadventures in Children: Exploration of a Dose-Response Relationship and Summary of Clinical Effects and Outcomes.
This study aimed to explore a dose-response relationship of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in THC-naïve children after unintentional acute exposure and compare clinical outcomes with non-naïve children. ⋯ There seems to be a direct relationship between the estimated oral THC dose (mg/kg), hospital disposition, and level of medical intervention required. Symptoms and duration of effects after THC exposure varied based on the route of exposure, age of patient, and history of previous THC experience.

Case ReportsRuptured Thoracic and Abdominal Gastrointestinal Duplication Cysts Presenting With Failure to Thrive.
Gastrointestinal duplication cysts are rare congenital malformations, with esophageal and gastric duplication cysts being among the rarest. We report an 8-week-old female who presented to the emergency department with failure to thrive and was subsequently found to have multiple gastric and esophageal duplication cysts that had ruptured intrathoracically and intra-abdominally. ⋯ This report emphasizes the unexpected, and sometimes relatively benign, presentations of gastrointestinal duplication cysts. To our knowledge, this is the first reported occurrence of multiple duplication cysts that independently ruptured thoracically and abdominally.

Interventions to Increase Point-of-Care Ultrasound Use in a Pediatric Emergency Department.
We sought to determine which interventions have effectively increased point-of-care ultrasound (US) use in a pediatric emergency department (ED). ⋯ Point-of-care US use has increased over time for both fellows and attending physicians. We observed that an administrative mandate led to a significant increase in US use among attending physicians.

Texting as a Means of Reducing Pediatric Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency Encounters Wait Times.
There is no universal system to facilitate communication between emergency rooms (ERs) and pediatric mental health providers, which leads to long wait times. This project tested the concept that a group texting application (GroupMe) could improve communication between providers and could reduce wait times by allowing frontline workers to contact multiple providers simultaneously. ⋯ Use of a group texting application has the potential to improve communication and wait times. However, its ability to reduce overall wait times is hampered when the limited availability of pediatric psychiatry providers results in delays in diagnosis and treatment decisions.
