Clinical Features and Management of Status Epilepticus in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Status epilepticus (SE) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in children. SE in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) are not well characterized. The aim of this study is to retrospectively investigate the clinical features and treatment of seizures in children admitted to the PICU of our hospital. ⋯ Status epilepticus is a neurological emergency that causes mortality and morbidity. Electroencephalographic monitoring is important for the recognition of seizures and rapid intervention. No superiority of second-line treatments or combined treatments was demonstrated in patients with SE.

ReviewIntravenous Lipid Emulsion Treatment for Calcium-Channel Blocker Intoxication: Pediatric Case Series and Review of the Literature.
Calcium-channel blocker (CCBs) intoxication remains the most lethal among all other drug overdoses (Arroyo and Kao. Pediatr Emerg Care 2009;25:533-538). This study aimed to describe the use and efficacy of intravenous lipid emulsion treatment in our CCB overdose patients in tandem with a comprehensive literature investigation. ⋯ Intravenous lipid emulsion therapy stands as a salvage treatment for CCB intoxications with cardiovascular failure unresponsive to standard supportive treatments.

Observational StudyA Prospective Observational Crossover Study Comparing Intubation by Pediatric Residents Using Video Laryngoscopy and Direct Laryngoscopy on a Pierre Robin Simulation Manikin.
Video laryngoscopy (VL) has been proposed to increase the likelihood of successful intubation in patients with predicted difficult airways such as those with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS). Prior studies have focused on the performance of anesthesiologists, who are generally considered airway experts. Our primary aim was to investigate the success rate of intubation using VL compared with direct laryngoscopy (DL) when attempted by pediatric residents on a PRS model. ⋯ Contrary to expectation, the intubation success rate was lower using VL than with DL among pediatric residents. This should be considered when designing residency training and in real-life resuscitation.

The Current State of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Training in Emergency Medicine Residencies.
Several studies show that emergency medicine (EM) physicians are less comfortable caring for pediatric patients than adults. The state of pediatric training has not been comprehensively evaluated since 2000. ⋯ Program directors report less confidence in graduating residents' competence in caring for pediatric patients compared with adult patients. We propose ideas to strengthen the quality of pediatric education in EM residencies.

ReviewEpidemiology of Injuries to Early Adolescents from Family Violence Evaluated in an Urban Pediatric Emergency Department.
Exposure to family violence during childhood and adolescence increases the risk for experiencing or perpetrating future violence. Social distancing protocols combined with reduction in access to youth/family services during the COVID-19 pandemic may have intensified the risk of exposure to familial violence. ⋯ More than half of violence-related injuries treated in the ED in this population resulted from family violence. Family violence is a prevalent and possibly underrecognized cause of injuries during adolescence. Further research should explore the potential of the ED as a setting for preventive interventions.
