The effect of duty hour regulation on resident surgical case volume in otolaryngology.
Evaluate the effect of duty hour regulation on graduating otolaryngology resident surgical case volume and analyze trends in surgical case volume for Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) key indicator cases from 1996 to 2011. ⋯ Implementation of the 2003 duty hour regulations has not reduced total volume of key indicator cases for graduating otolaryngology residents. The overall trend in operative volume is increasing for several specific key indicators.

Correlation between REM AHI and quality-of-life scores in children with sleep-disordered breathing.
Prior research has demonstrated poor correlation between the obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) on full-night polysomnogram (PSG) and quality-of-life (QOL) scores. We aim to examine the association between rapid eye movement (REM) AHI and QOL scores in children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). ⋯ Neither obstructive AHI nor REM AHI correlates with total OSA-18 QOL scores. With the exception of nadir oxygen saturation, PSG parameters do not reflect the burden of SDB on QOL in children.

Long-term sinonasal outcomes of aspirin desensitization in aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease.
This study aimed to assess sinonasal outcomes in patients with aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) undergoing aspirin desensitization following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). ⋯ Aspirin desensitization following ESS appears to be a well-tolerated and effective adjunctive therapy for long-term control of nasal polyposis in patients with AERD.

Dexamethasone's effect in the retrocochlear auditory centers of a noise-induced hearing loss mouse model.
Examine prophylactic effects of dexamethasone (Dex) in retrocochlear auditory centers in a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) mouse model. ⋯ Our NIHL mouse model demonstrated dose-dependent Dex pretreatment otoprotection against NIHL with preservation of retrocochlear auditory neurons.

Untreated head and neck surgical disease in Sierra Leone: a cross-sectional, countrywide survey.
Demonstrate how the Surgeons OverSeas Assessment of Surgical Need (SOSAS) can be used to determine the burden of head and neck (H&N) surgical disease in developing countries and identify reasons for untreated disease. ⋯ These results show limited access for patients to be evaluated for a potential H&N surgical condition in Sierra Leone. The true incidence of untreated surgical disease is unknown as most respondents were not evaluated by a surgeon. This survey could be used in other countries as health care professionals assess surgical needs throughout the world.
