(1) Analyze otologic procedural malpractice litigation in the United States of America. (2) Discuss ways to prevent future malpractice litigation. ⋯ Malpractice trials were resolved in the defendant's favor in the majority of cases. Cerumen removal was the most common procedure leading to complaint and the procedure most likely to result in payment. Hearing loss was the most common injury cited. Payment was highest in acoustic neuroma and stapedectomy cases.

Randomized Controlled TrialDoes topical anesthesia using aerosolized lidocaine inhibit the superior laryngeal nerve reflex?
This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of topical lidocaine in attenuating the laryngeal reflex and blunting hemodynamic response by inhibition of the superior laryngeal nerve in laryngeal microsurgery, which would be helpful in preventing potential complications. ⋯ These findings indicate that preoperative topical lidocaine application may be helpful in attenuating airway-circulatory reflexes in laryngeal microscopic surgery.

Differentiating arytenoid dislocation and recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis by arytenoid movement in laryngoscopic video.
To present a new method of quantifying arytenoid movement during inspiration and determine if it can be used to distinguish arytenoid dislocation from vocal fold paralysis. ⋯ Both pixel-valued and unitless measures of arytenoid movement were significantly greater in arytenoid dislocation than vocal fold paralysis. Pixel-valued measurements were included to demonstrate the ability to make quantitative comparisons across subjects without precise knowledge of camera precision, provided position is approximately stable, as each measurement is inherently normalized by vocal tract length. Future studies will apply this new method of evaluating vocal fold immobility disorders on a larger scale and incorporate a more diverse group of etiologies.

Comparative StudyPositional dependency and surgical success of relocation pharyngoplasty among patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea.
To examine the effect of positional dependency on surgical success among patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) following modified uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, known as relocation pharyngoplasty. ⋯ The presence of positional dependency at baseline was a favorable outcome predictor of surgical success among severe OSA patients undergoing relocation pharyngoplasty.

Review Meta AnalysisSmoking cessation interventions and cessation rates in the oncology population: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.
To evaluate tobacco smoking cessation interventions and cessation rates in the oncology population through a systematic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ Our systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate that tobacco cessation interventions in the oncology population, in both the short-term and long-term follow-up groups, do not significantly affect cessation rates. The perioperative period, though, may represent an important teachable moment with regard to smoking cessation.
