Case ReportsLong term use of metformin leading to vitamin B 12 deficiency.
Metformin is a commonly used oral hypoglycaemic agent worldwide. Gastrointestinal side effects and lactic acidosis related to metformin usage are commonly recognized. However, the associated vitamin B12 deficiency is less well known. We present a case of long term metformin use resulting in vitamin B12 deficiency.

Comparative StudyUse of a standardised diabetic ketoacidosis management protocol improved clinical outcomes.
We analysed the clinical outcomes of using a standardised protocol in the management of diabetic ketoacidosis. Of 71 admissions, the protocol group (n=35) had significantly shorter length of hospitalisation, shorter time to normalise bicarbonate, fewer incidence of hypokalaemia and hypoglycaemia compared with the control group (n=36).

Comparative StudyAssociation of RAGE (p.Gly82Ser) and MnSOD (p.Val16Ala) polymorphisms with diabetic retinopathy in T2DM patients from north India.
The present study aimed to examine the association of RAGE (p.Gly82Ser) and MnSOD (p.Val16Ala) polymorphisms with diabetic retinopathy (DR) in north Indian T2DM patients. ⋯ The findings indicate a statistically significant association of p.Gly82Ser polymorphism in RAGE with DR in T2DM patients.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyPrevalence and clinical implications of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy in type 2 diabetes: results from a nationwide hospital-based study of diabetic neuropathy in Korea.
To determine the prevalence and risk factors for painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN) and evaluate sleep impairment and quality of life in patients with PDPN. ⋯ The prevalence of PDPN in Koreans was comparable to that in Western populations. PDPN may impair sleep and quality of life compared with non-PDPN, and physicians should carefully consider pain symptoms in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Anthropometric measures of abdominal adiposity for the identification of cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents.
Sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD) was obtained in 65 adolescents referred for assessment of cardiometabolic risk. We found that SAD was associated with cardiometabolic risk factors independent of BMI in males, but that SAD was not superior to BMI or other measures of abdominal adiposity for the detection of metabolic syndrome.
