To determine the time course of free radical generation and the role of allopurinol as a cardioprotective agent during coronary artery bypass surgery. ⋯ The results of this study show that, during bypass surgery, there is an increase in lipid peroxidation products and cardiac creatine kinase enzyme at the onset of reperfusion indicating increased free radical activity. It also suggests that pretreatment with allopurinol could effectively attenuate post-ischemic reperfusion injury.
