to identify the extent to which Early Warning Systems (EWS) are used by midwives in the United Kingdom (UK), the maternity settings they are used in, physiological parameters used to 'trigger' referral, training provision, barriers to implementation and role in preventing maternal morbidity. ⋯ most UK midwives are using EWS, with the highest use in obstetric units. The heterogeneity of EWS currently used potentially limits collation of evidence to inform appropriate system level responses. Research is needed to evaluate the role of EWS to prevent maternal morbidity during and after pregnancy in different maternity settings.

to describe and compare women's choices and experiences of maternity care before and after the opening of the Barkantine Birth Centre, a new freestanding midwifery unit in an inner city area. ⋯ this survey in an inner city area showed that women who chose the freestanding midwifery unit care had positive experiences to report. Taken together with the findings of the Birthplace Programme, it adds further weight to the evidence in support of freestanding midwifery unit care for women without obstetric complications.

labour pain is unique and complex. In order to develop a more sophisticated understanding of labour pain this exploratory study aimed to examine women's experiences of labour pain within the perspective of modern pain science. An improved understanding of labour pain will assist in informing and enhancing pain management approaches. ⋯ developing interventions for labour pain that promote positive evaluative processes and cultivate a state of mind focussing on the present may improve women's experiences of labour pain.

Pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood: a meta-synthesis of the lived experiences of immigrant women.
pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood are natural processes that bring joy to individual women and families. However, for many migrant women, becoming a mother while attempting to settle in a new country where the culture is different, can be a challenge for them. ⋯ women from immigrant backgrounds have the right to receive adequate and sensitive health care during the childbearing and childrearing times regardless of their migrant status.
