Registered nurses' perceptions of educational preparation for professional work and development in their profession.
There is a lack of knowledge regarding graduate nurses' experiences of preparation in nursing education for their work in health care. The aim was to describe registered nurses' (RNs) perceptions of preparation in nursing education for their professional work and development in the nursing profession. The sample consisted of 339 RNs with 3 years experience taken from Swedish class registers for graduation in nursing education. ⋯ Research methodology was of little importance for RNs' work. RNs could not make use of or conduct research in their work but research planning was significantly higher for those with extensive university education. This study mainly indicates that RNs need a stimulating work environment, including mentoring and support to enable continuous professional development in health care.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyObstetric skills drills: evaluation of teaching methods.
To determine the most effective method of delivering training to staff on the management of an obstetric emergency. ⋯ Obstetrics is a high risk speciality, in which emergencies are to some extent, inevitable. Training staff to manage these emergencies is a fundamental principal of risk management. Traditional risk management strategies based on incident reporting and event analysis are reactive and not always effective. Simulation based training is an appropriate proactive approach to reducing errors and risk in obstetrics, improving teamwork and communication, whilst giving the student a multiplicity of transferable skills to improve their performance.

Evaluation of an innovative nursing exchange programme: health counselling skills and cultural awareness.
In 2006, a two-week summer exchange programme was conducted for nursing students from 15 institutes and/or universities, including places in Taiwan, Macau, Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. ⋯ Although the findings cannot be generalized, the programme evaluation highlights the positive impact on one's exchange perspective and professional and personal development of a culturally integrated exchange programme for nursing students, with emphasis on skill practices and cultural diversity.

Comparative StudyStudent's perceptions of effective clinical teaching revisited.
Despite a wealth of research on clinical teaching, the criteria for determining what constitutes effective clinical teaching remain poorly defined [Cholowski, K., 2002. Nursing students' and clinical educators' perceptions of characteristics of effective clinical educators in an Australian university school of nursing. Journal of Advanced Nursing 39 (5), 412-420]. ⋯ How well students perceived that they were accepted by staff, student-teacher ratios and peer support also appeared to impact student's views of effective clinical teaching. This research has implications for employment and evaluation practices for teachers in applied fields such as nursing. The study raises questions about the recent trend toward temporary employment of clinical teachers and in the separation of academic and clinical roles of nurse educators.
