Topical anesthesia for cataract surgery: a population-based perspective.
To analyze the anesthetic regimen and sedation in a population-based cohort of unselected cataract surgery cases operated on with the goal of maximizing the percentage of patients with topical anesthesia and no sedation. ⋯ It is possible to achieve a high percentage of effective topical anesthesia for cataract surgery in a population-based setting. The findings have implications for cost-containment in health services.

Comparative StudyCircumcorneal perilimbal anesthesia in extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation.
To evaluate the effectiveness of subconjunctival anesthesia in conventional extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. ⋯ Circumcorneal perilimbal anesthesia was effective for ECCE with IOL implantation. It is important that the surgeon is experienced in the technique and that patients are carefully selected.

Case ReportsCorneal laceration with total but isolated aniridia caused by a pecking injury.
A 38-year-old man sustained a left eye injury after being attacked by a mynah bird. Ocular examination revealed a beak-shaped, full-thickness corneal laceration with total aniridia in the left eye. No other ocular injury was observed, and the lens and posterior segment remained normal over the subsequent 3 months. A penetrating keratoplasty was planned for visual restoration.

Case ReportsPosterior capsule rupture after a paint-pellet injury.
We report a case in which a high-velocity paint pellet injury to the eye ruptured the posterior lens capsule. In the setting of blunt trauma, posterior capsule rupture has rarely been reported. Recognizing such a rupture allows the surgeon to plan the best surgical approach.
