Review Meta AnalysisEpothilone-induced peripheral neuropathy: a review of current knowledge.
Epothilones, belonging to the family of microtubule stabilizing agents, have shown prolonged remissions and improved survival in various types of refractory, treatment-resistant cancer. Ixabepilone (BMS-247550) is the main representative of these compounds. Peripheral neuropathy is a significant toxicity of epothilones, eventually resulting in dose modification and changes in the treatment plan. ⋯ EIPN remains a very challenging area in the field of toxic neuropathies. As such, there is a need for further preclinical and prospective clinical studies to elucidate the pathogenesis of EIPN and provide further robust evidence on its incidence, course, and reversibility.

Case ReportsReliability and validity of a Thai version of the edmonton symptom assessment scale (ESAS-Thai).
The Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS), created by the Edmonton Group in 1991, is an instrument assessing symptom control that is commonly used in palliative care. It asks patients to rate nine items on 11-point numeric rating scales. ⋯ After the translation and cross-cultural adaptation, the Thai version of the ESAS achieved good levels of face validity and internal consistency. It is now available as a patient-administered instrument to evaluate symptoms among palliative care patients in Thailand.

Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy and safety of the seven-day buprenorphine transdermal system in opioid-naïve patients with moderate to severe chronic low back pain: an enriched, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
This article presents the results of a pivotal Phase 3 study that assesses a new treatment for the management of chronic low back pain: a transdermal patch containing the opioid buprenorphine. In this randomized, placebo-controlled study with an enriched enrollment design, the buprenorphine transdermal system (BTDS) was found to be efficacious and generally well tolerated. ⋯ BTDS was efficacious in the treatment of opioid-naïve patients with moderate to severe chronic low back pain. Most treatment-emergent adverse events observed were consistent with those associated with the use of opioid agonists and transdermal patches.

Multicenter StudyPreliminary assessment of a neuropathic pain treatment and referral algorithm for patients with cancer.
The purpose of this case series study was to pilot test an evidence-based neuropathic pain (NP) treatment and referral algorithm for use by oncology nurses when managing cancer-related NP. ⋯ Evidence from this pilot study suggests that NP evidence-based treatment may result in improved symptoms, function, and patient satisfaction. A randomized controlled trial is needed to further assess algorithm efficacy.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyNonnutritive sucking and oral sucrose relieve neonatal pain during intramuscular injection of hepatitis vaccine.
Newborns are subject to pain during routine invasive procedures. Pain caused by immunization injections is preventable, but remains untreated in neonates. ⋯ NNS and oral sucrose can provide analgesic effects and need to be given before painful procedures as brief as a one-minute IM injection. Sucrose orally administered two minutes before injection more effectively reduced newborns' pain during injection than NNS. Both nonpharmacological methods more effectively relieved newborns' pain, stabilized physiological parameters, and shortened cry duration during IM hepatitis injection than routine care.
