ReviewEvaluating physician emotion regulation in serious illness conversations using multimodal assessment.
Emotion regulation by the physician can influence the effectiveness of serious illness conversations. The feasibility of multimodal assessment of emotion regulation during these conversations is unknown. ⋯ Our novel, multimodal assessment of physician emotion regulation was feasible in a simulated SICG encounter. Physicians exhibited an incomplete understanding of their emotion regulation strategies.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable neurodegenerative disease of the motor neurons. Given the evolutive characteristics of this disease, palliative care principles should be a foundation of ALS care. A multidisciplinary medical intervention is of paramount importance in the different phases of disease. ⋯ The principal problems which require intensive supportive care include cognitive disturbances, psychological distress, pain, sialorrhrea, nutrition, and ventilatory support. Communication skills of health-care professionals are mandatory to manage the inevitability of death. Palliative sedation has peculiar aspects in this population, particularly with the decision of withdrawing ventilatory support.

Pediatric Palliative Care Program Implementation in LMICs: A Systematic Review using SWOT Analysis.
Of the estimated 21 million children world-wide who need access to pediatric palliative care (PPC), about 97% currently reside in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). Access to PPC programs in LMIC are limited, and successful strategies and barriers to program implementation remain understudied. ⋯ PPC programs are being successfully implemented in resource limited settings. Hospice and palliative medicine organizations should sponsor PPC clinicians to describe and disseminate more detailed descriptions of successes and challenges with program implementation to help build and grow further PPC initiatives in LMICs.

Development of a guide to multidimensional needs assessment in the palliative care initial encounter (MAP).
Ensuring patient-centered palliative care requires a comprehensive assessment of needs beginning in the initial encounter. However, there is no generally accepted guide for carrying out this multidimensional needs assessment as a first step in palliative intervention. ⋯ MAP is an expert panel-endorsed semi-structured clinical interview guide for the comprehensive, systematic, and proactive initial assessment to efficiently assess multiple domains while adjusting to the needs of each patient. A future study will assess the feasibility of using the MAP guide within the timeframe of the palliative care initial encounter.

Perceived Palliative Care Education Needs of GP Trainees: A National Study.
GP's provide palliative care in the community. Managing complex palliative needs can be challenging for GPs and even more so for GP trainees. During the postgraduate training period GP trainees are working in the community but have more time for education. This time in their career could present a good opportunity for palliative care education. For any education to be effective their educational needs must first be clarified. ⋯ This is the first multisite national qualitative study exploring the perceived palliative care educational needs and preferred educational methods of GP trainees. Trainees expressed a unanimous need for experiential palliative care education. Trainees also identified means to address their educational requirements. This study suggests that a collaborative approach between specialist palliative care and general practice is necessary to create educational opportunities.
