Perioperative Alanyl-Glutamine-Supplemented Parenteral Nutrition in Chronic Radiation Enteritis Patients With Surgical Intestinal Obstruction: A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled Study.
A prospective, randomized, controlled study was performed to evaluate the effects of perioperative alanyl-glutamine-supplemented parenteral nutrition (PN) support on the immunologic function, intestinal permeability, and nutrition status of surgical patients with chronic radiation enteritis (CRE)-induced intestinal obstruction. ⋯ Gln-PN significantly boosted the immune state and decreased the intestinal permeability of CRE patients. However, Gln-PN was not superior to standard PN in improving the nutrition state and intestinal motility of surgical patients with CRE-induced intestinal obstruction.

Rhubarb to Facilitate Placement of Nasojejunal Feeding Tubes in Patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
Prokinetic agents are sometimes needed to aid in the placement of nasojejunal feeding tubes in patients at risk of malnutrition. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of rhubarb as a new prokinetic agent to replace metoclopramide and erythromycin in the placement of nasojejunal feeding tubes. ⋯ Rhubarb could serve as an effective prokinetic agent to promote the insertion of nasojejunal feeding tubes.

Investigation of Bone Health Subsequent to Vitamin D Supplementation in Children Following Burn Injury.
The effect of supplemental vitamin D on fracture occurrence following burn injuries is unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate postintervention incidence of fractures in children during the rehabilitative phase postburn (PB) following participation in a randomized clinical trial of vitamin D supplementation. ⋯ This preliminary report suggests there may be benefit of vitamin D3 in reducing postdischarge fracture risk. Results reaffirm the importance of monitoring bone health in pediatric patients postburn.

Effect of rotational therapy on aspiration risk of enteral feeds.
Enteral nutrition has been demonstrated to reduce ventilator days and the incidence of pneumonia, but the safest route for providing enteral nutrition to mechanically ventilated patients is unclear. Our objective was to determine if there is a difference between the incidences of microaspiration of gastric secretions in patients fed via a nasogastric tube vs a postpyloric tube while undergoing rotational therapy for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ⋯ The results of this study indicate that enteral nutrition should not be delayed or stopped to position the tube in patients with ARDS on rotational therapy.

A double-blind randomized study comparing the efficacy and safety of a composite vs a conventional intravenous fat emulsion in postsurgical gastrointestinal tumor patients.
Composite intravenous fat emulsion, a fat emulsion composed of soybean oil, medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), olive oil, and fish oil, was evaluated for metabolic efficacy, immune modulation, clinical efficacy, safety, and tolerance in surgical gastrointestinal (GI) tumor patients. ⋯ composite IVFE was comparable with conventional LCT/MCT IVFE in efficacy, safety, tolerance, and clinical outcomes in surgical GI tumor patients.
