Intervention programs targeting parents to manage childhood overweight and obesity have emerged based on parents influence on the health behaviors of their children. The purpose of this review was to systematically evaluate intervention programs targeting parents to manage childhood overweight and obesity using the Reach, Efficacy, Adopt, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework. ⋯ The majority of intervention programs demonstrated improvement in child BMI. However intervention programs did not reach families of diverse race/ethnicity, were provided by highly trained professionals, and demonstrated high attrition, thus limiting generalizability.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Randomized Prospective Clinical Trial Comparing Room Temperature and Warmed Intravenous Fluid Boluses on Pediatric Patients' Comfort.
A common complaint among pediatric patients receiving an intravenous (IV) fluid bolus is that their arm feels cold and uncomfortable. The purpose of this study is to test if administering warmed IV fluids, as compared to room temperature IV fluids, results in increased comfort among pediatric patients seeking care in an emergency department. A blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted and 126 pediatric patients were enrolled. ⋯ After the first 15 minutes of IV fluid administration, the patients who received warmed IV fluids reported higher comfort than the patients who received room temperature IV fluids, t(118)=2.04, p=0.04. Additionally, patients who received the room temperature IV fluids reported that their arms felt cooler than patients who received the warmed fluids, t(118)=3.25, p=0.0015. Warming IV fluids has the potential to improve the experience of IV bolus administration for pediatric patients.

Autism diagnosis rates trail significantly in the African American community. This pre-test post-test pilot study evaluated an African American inner-city church health ambassadors (HAs) autism spectrum disorder (ASD) awareness training session. ⋯ Several of these effects were maintained 3 months later. Findings underscore the usefulness of the intervention for increasing the dissemination of knowledge about ASD and the opportunity to positively affect ASD screening, early intervention, and policy standards applicable to this vulnerable population.

Asthma Self-Management Goals, Beliefs and Behaviors of Urban African American Adolescents Prior to Transitioning to Adult Health Care.
Adolescence is a unique time of development incorporating a transition from child centered to adult centered health care. This transition period can be particularly challenging for individuals with a chronic disease such as asthma. Inadequate transition planning during adolescence may place an already vulnerable population such as African American adolescents with known health disparities in asthma prevalence, morbidity and mortality at risk for a continuation of poor health outcomes across the lifespan. Central to transition planning for these youth is the core element of developing and prioritizing goals. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the asthma self-management goals, beliefs and behaviors of urban African American adolescents prior to transitioning from pediatric to adult health care. ⋯ Findings suggest that adolescents with asthma form both short term and long term goals. Their goals indicated a need for guided support to facilitate a successful health care transition.

Compassion fatigue in nursing has been shown to impact the quality of patient care and employee satisfaction and engagement. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence and severity of compassion fatigue among pediatric nurses and variations in prevalence based on respondent demographics using a cross-sectional survey design. Nurses under 40 years of age, with 6-10 years of experience and/or working in a medical-surgical unit had significantly lower compassion satisfaction and higher levels of burnout. Secondary traumatic stress from caring for children with severe illness or injury or end of life was a key contributor to compassion fatigue.
