Multicenter Study Comparative StudyTrends of ulcerative colitis-associated colorectal cancer in Korea: A KASID study.
The number of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) in Korea has increased. In addition, the number of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) associated with UC has also increased. Therefore, this population-based nationwide study was conducted to investigate the incidence of CRC in patients with UC in Korea and compare these results to those of studies conducted in other countries. ⋯ The cumulative incidence of UC-associated CRCs in Korea was found to be comparable to that of western countries. The overall occurrence of UC-associated CRC in Korea may be growing, therefore, intensive surveillance colonoscopy and constructive chemoprevention should be encouraged to enable early detection and treatment of UC-associated CRCs in Korea.

Comparative StudyProtective effect of sulfhydryl-containing antioxidants against ischemia/reperfusion injury of prepubertal rat intestine.
Reactive oxygen species generated during reperfusion of the tissue are known to play an important role in the basic pathophysiology of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the protective effects of three sulfide-based antioxidants, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), erdosteine (ERD), and alpha-lipoic acid (LA), on I/R injury of the small intestine tissue. ⋯ All of the sulfhydryl-containing antioxidants used in this study exhibited a significant role in attenuating intestinal I/R injury; however, the outcome of the LA-treated group was significantly marked than that of the others.

Antinociceptive effect of chronic lithium on visceral hypersensitivity in a rat model of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome: The role of nitric oxide pathway.
Lithium, a widely used drug in bipolar-affective disorders, plays gastro-protective roles. The effects of lithium on several tissues are mediated through nitric oxide (NO), which regulates gastrointestinal motility and mucosal integrity. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of chronic lithium administration on visceral hypersensitivity and to investigate the role of NO as a potential mechanism of lithium in a rat model of irritable bowel syndrome. ⋯ The results indicate the antinociceptive property of chronic lithium on visceral hypersensitivity. As this effect was lowered by NOS inhibitors, NO might play a role in the protective effect of lithium to some extent.

Impaired liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy using the Pringle maneuver: Protective effect of mesna.
We investigated the role of the prophylactic administration of the antioxidant 2-mercaptoethane sulfonate (mesna) on the hepatocyte-regenerating capacity following partial hepatectomy (PH) with concurrent Pringle maneuver. ⋯ The excessive activation of NF-kappaB is related to the suppression of hepatocyte-regenerating activity following PH with concurrent liver ischemia. Mesna pretreatment protects the liver against the Pringle-induced antimitotic effect after PH via the prevention of oxidative stress and the inhibition of NF-kappaB activation.
