Negative hepatitis B envelope antigen predicts intrahepatic recurrence in hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma after ablation therapy.
Patients with persistently active hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication are at high risk for progression to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The influence of the viral load of HBV on intrahepatic recurrence after local ablation therapy in patients with HBV-related HCC has not been elucidated. We aimed to evaluate predictors of intrahepatic recurrence and clarify the correlation between viral load and intrahepatic recurrence after percutaneous ablation. ⋯ These findings show that HBeAg-negativity and serum AFP levels were associated with late intrahepatic recurrence of HCC, implicating HBeAg-negativity as a risk factor for de novo recurrence after percutaneous ablation in HBV-related HCC.

Validation study of the Leeds Dyspepsia Questionnaire in a multi-ethnic Asian population.
Outcome measures for clinical trials in dyspepsia require an assessment of symptom response. There is a lack of validated instruments assessing dyspepsia symptoms in the Asian region. We aimed to translate and validate the Leeds Dyspepsia Questionnaire (LDQ) in a multi-ethnic Asian population. ⋯ The Malaysian versions of the LDQ are valid, reliable and responsive instruments for assessing symptoms in a multi-ethnic Asian population with dyspepsia.

Endoscopic, clinicopathological features and prognosis of very young patients with gastric cancer.
The number of clinical reports of very young (<35 years) patients with gastric cancer are limited. We aimed to investigate the endoscopic and clinicopathological features and long-term prognosis of this unique group of patients. ⋯ The study describes that very young patients with gastric cancer were mainly females, who were less likely to present with alarm features, but had a high frequency of family history of gastric cancer; and the majority of these cancers were located in gastric body, and they had similar long-term prognosis compared with elderly counterparts if curative surgical resection was performed.

Dihydrolipoyl histidinate zinc complex, a new antioxidant, attenuates hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.
Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is characterized by significant oxidative stress, which induces characteristic changes in the antioxidant system and organ injury leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of dihydrolipoyl histidinate zinc complex (DHLHZn) on oxidative damage after severe hepatic I/R injury. ⋯ The new antioxidant DHLHZn may have potential for therapeutic application in liver I/R injury, although this is a limited animal study.
