The objective of the study was to clarify the role of a palliative pancreaticoduodenectomy in both pancreatic and periampullary adenocarcinomas. ⋯ There was a survival benefit after a pancreaticoduodenectomy regardless of the resection margin or primary origin of the periampullary adenocarcinoma, as compared with a bypass operation. The resection margin after a pancreaticoduodenectomy did not play a role in the survival outcome in pancreatic head adenocarcinoma. Therefore, we recommend that pancreaticoduodenectomies should be attempted whenever possible.

A review on the role of microRNA in biology, diagnosis, and treatment of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
MicroRNAs are molecules implicated in RNA-RNA interaction, playing a role in cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as in carcinogenesis. Knowledge on their biological features is necessary to understand their role in phenotypic characteristics of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. ⋯ The field of microRNAs promises novel diagnostic and therapeutic tools in the management of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

This study aimed to describe a 10-year epidemiological trend of patients with first-attack acute pancreatitis (AP) in Taiwan. ⋯ The overall incidence of first-attack AP changed slightly in Taiwan, which differs from the increasing trend observed in most Western countries. Although more patients had severe attacks in recent years, hospital mortality declined.
