Hydroxyethyl starch resuscitation reduces the risk of intra-abdominal hypertension in severe acute pancreatitis.
This study aimed to address whether hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is beneficial for intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in early stages. ⋯ Fluid resuscitation with HES in the early stages of SAP can decrease the risk of intra-abdominal hypertension and reduce the use of mechanical ventilation.

Efficacy of recombinant human interleukin-10 in prevention of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis in subjects with increased risk.
Pancreatitis is the most common major complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Inflammatory cytokines are released during acute pancreatitis. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a potent inhibitor of cytokines and has been shown to attenuate pancreatitis in animal models and pilot human studies. This study aimed to determine whether prophylactic IL-10 administration reduces the frequency and/or severity of post-ERCP pancreatitis in high-risk patients. ⋯ : There was no apparent benefit of IL-10 treatment when compared with placebo in reducing the incidence of post-ERCP acute pancreatitis in subjects with increased risk.

Preventive effects of ulinastatin on post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis in high-risk patients: a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
Previous studies have shown that ulinastatin may be effective at preventing pancreatitis after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). However, routine administration of ulinastatin is unlikely to be cost-effective. So the aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the effectiveness of low-dose ulinastatin at preventing pancreatitis in patients at high risk of post-ERCP pancreatitis. ⋯ Low-dose prophylactic treatment with ulinastatin immediately after ERCP did not show a beneficial influence on the incidence of post-ERCP pancreatitis and hyperamylasemia in high-risk patients.

Effect of antioxidants on postoperative hyperamylasemia in coronary bypass surgery.
Antioxidants may reduce pancreatic cellular injury after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) Twenty patients (Group A) received vitamin E (600 mg/ day) for 28 days and vitamin C (2 g/day) and allopurinol (600 mg/day) 2 days before and 1 day after CABG. Seventeen patients (Group C) received all drugs for 3 days, and 25 (Group B) and 19 (Group D) patients served as corresponding controls. ⋯ After surgery serum P-amylase increased in all study groups and urine P-amylase decreased. Postoperative serum hyperamylasemia, whether primarily renal or pancreatic, cannot be decreased by pretreatment with allopurinol, vitamin C, and vitamin E.
