We have previously established a nonobese diabetes mouse model characterized by moderate hyperglycemic levels, like those usually occurring in human type 2 diabetes. As oxidative stress is considered a major mechanism of progressive beta-cell damage in diabetes, we tested in this model the protective effects of a new low-molecular-weight antioxidant, namely, bis(1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)decandioate dihydrochloride (IAC). ⋯ In the STZ-NA diabetic mouse model, the new antioxidant, IAC, improves diabetic metabolic alterations, likely by counteracting beta-cell dysfunction and loss associated with oxidative stress.

Functional and morphological changes in pancreatic remnant after pancreaticoduodenectomy.
Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency has been reported to be more common in pancreaticogastrostomy (PG) than in pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). This study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcome after PD between these 2 groups. ⋯ There is no significant difference in pancreatic exocrine or endocrine insufficiency, gastric emptying time, and positive panendoscopic findings between PJ and PG. Pancreaticojejunostomy was associated with a higher pancreatic remnant-related relaparotomy rate; however, because of a shorter follow-up in the PG group, a continuous long-term follow-up is still needed.

Intraductal papillary-mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas encompasses a spectrum of neoplasms with both morphological and immunohistochemical variations of mucin glycoproteins. Recently, a consensus nomenclature and criteria were histologically defined for classifying these variants of IPMNs into gastric, intestinal, pancreatobiliary, and oncocytic types. The purpose of this study was to determine associations between the histological types and clinicopathological features in patients with IPMN. ⋯ Evaluation of the histological types of IPMN may help to predict the clinical course of patients with IPMN and to design improved clinical management for these patients.

The 1992 Atlanta classification is a clinically based classification system that defines the severity and complications of acute pancreatitis. The purpose of this review was to assess whether the terms abandoned by the Atlanta classification are really discarded in the literature. The second objective was to review what new terms have appeared in the literature since the Atlanta symposium. ⋯ This review demonstrates that the Atlanta classification is still not universally accepted. Several abandoned terms are frequently used, and new terms have emerged that describe manifestations in acute pancreatitis that were not specifically addressed during the Atlanta symposium.
