Acute care for elderly patients in a functional impairment prevention unit.
To determine whether the care of patients with moderate dependency who were hospitalised in a functional impairment prevention unit (FIPU) was superior to that of a conventional unit (CU) in terms of functional impairment and mean stay. ⋯ The acute care of elderly patients with moderate dependency in an FIPU was independently associated with less functional decline and shorter stays.

Renal function at admission as a prognostic marker for patients hospitalised for a first episode of heart failure. Results of the PREDICE study.
Heart failure (HF) is a frequent condition that deteriorates quality of life and results in high morbidity and mortality. A considerable number of studies have been implemented in recent years to determine the factors that affect the prognosis of HF; however, few studies have assessed the prognosis of patients hospitalised for their first episode of HF. The aim of our study was to analyse the prognostic impact of renal function on patients hospitalised for a first episode of HF. ⋯ The presence of kidney failure at admission was a marker of poor prognosis in our cohort of patients hospitalised for a first episode of HF.

Consensus document for the training of residents in cardiovascular risk.
Vascular disease is currently a major health problem, not only for its high prevalence but also for the considerable morbidity, mortality and disability that it entails. Medical internists play a central role in diagnosing and treating vascular disease and controlling the cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) that cause it. ⋯ This proposal by the Cardiovascular Risk Workgroup of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine emerged as a response by our Society to the specific need for training in CRFs. Implementing this proposal would provide an important benefit, not only for medical internists in training but also for society as a whole.

Neutrophils as instigators of thrombosis: Beyond antimicrobial protection.
When activated, neutrophils release structures (NETs) composed of DNA, histones and granular proteins that provide an ideal matrix for platelet activation and coagulation mechanisms, thereby contributing to the pathogenesis of thrombosis in venous and arterial territories, as well as cancer-associated thrombosis. NETs play a key role in immunothrombosis, a term that describes the relationship between the immune response and coagulation.
