Mentoring skills are valuable assets for academic medicine and allied health faculty, who influence and help shape the careers of the next generation of healthcare providers. Mentors are role models who also act as guides for students' personal and professional development over time. Mentors can be instrumental in conveying explicit academic knowledge required to master curriculum content. ⋯ The relationship benefits mentors as well through greater productivity, career satisfaction, and personal gratification. Maximizing the satisfaction and productivity of such relationships entails self-awareness, focus, mutual respect, and explicit communication about the relationship. In this article, the authors describe the development of optimal mentoring relationships, emphasizing the importance of different approaches to mentorship, roles of the mentors and mentees, mentor and mentee benefits, interprofessional mentorships for teams, gender and mentorship, and culture and mentorship.

Clinician educators at academic medical centers often lack the community, mentorship, and faculty development to support their missions around education scholarship and teaching. Inadequate support for clinician educators can lead to professional dissatisfaction and slowed academic advancement. In 2014, ASH conducted a needs assessment of medical school hematology course directors, hematology-oncology fellowship program directors, and other ASH members identified as educators to determine this community's desire for faculty development in medical education. ⋯ A series of follow-up webinars have been developed to deliver additional content not covered during the workshop and to continue mentorship relationships. The curriculum will be further refined based on feedback from faculty and participants. Long-term outcome measurement will include tracking all participants' publications and presentations, time to promotion, and involvement in national medical education initiatives.

With the growing burden of cancer in minority populations and limited progress in eliminating cancer disparities, it has become important to develop a diverse oncology workforce in basic, clinical, and behavioral research who will address cancer disparities and increase the participation of minority populations in clinical trials. To address the lack of well-trained underrepresented minority cancer scientists in Florida, the University of Florida collaborated with Florida A&M University in 2012 to establish the Florida Prostate Cancer Research Training Opportunities for Outstanding Leaders (ReTOOL) Program. ⋯ This paper discusses the lessons learned from administering the ReTOOL program for 5 years, which includes having the right inputs (such as majority-minority institutions partnership, funding, faculty advisors, committed mentors, culturally competent staff, and standardized program requirements) and processes (such as pipeline approach, structured applications system, didactic curriculum, research experience, and continuous mentoring) for an effective research training program. The program impact is an increase in the pool of underrepresented minority candidates with scientific and academic career progression paths focused on reducing cancer health disparities.

The study aims to explore variation in scholarly productivity outcomes by underrepresented status among a diverse sample of researchers in a community-engaged training program. We identified 141 trainees from a web-based survey of researchers in the National Cancer Institute-funded, Community Networks Program Centers (CNPCs) (2011-2016). We conducted a series of multiple logistic regression models to estimate the effect of National Institutes of Health (NIH)-defined underrepresented status on four, self-reported, scholarly productivity outcomes in the previous 5 years: number of publications (first-authored and total) and funded grants (NIH and any agency). ⋯ Reporting ≥ 1 mentors (vs. none) was also positively associated (p < 0.05) with these outcomes. The CNPC underrepresented trainees had similar success in first-authored publications and NIH funding as non-underrepresented trainees, but not total publications and grants. Examining trainees' mentoring experiences over time in relation to scholarly productivity outcomes is needed.

Colorectal and stomach cancers are the top ranking cancers in Oman. Most of the patients are diagnosed at advanced disease stages. The aim of this study is to explore the knowledge of risk factors, symptoms and the time needed to seek medical care for stomach cancer and colorectal cancer (CRC) among Omani participants attending 28 local health centres (LHCs) in the governorate of Muscat, the capital city of Oman. ⋯ There is an urgent need to increase the public's awareness of stomach cancer and CRC in Oman, particularly with evidence emerging of an increase in the incidence. School curriculums could include sessions on cancer education and the information be reiterated to students periodically. A strategy to establish a CRC screening programme in Oman might be paramount as the incidence of CRC increased.
