Interhospital transfers of the critically ill: Time spent at referring institutions influences survival.
To determine if the length of stay at a referring institution intensive care unit (ICU) before transfer to a tertiary/quaternary care facility is a risk factor for mortality. ⋯ Length of stay at the referring institution before transfer is a risk factor for worse outcomes, with longer stays associated with increased likelihood of mortality. Further studies delineating which factors most affect length of stay at referring institutions, though a difficult task, should be pursued.

Observational StudySerum oxygen radical activity and total antioxidation capacity are related with severities of surgical patient with sepsis: Prospective pilot study.
The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the correlation between clinical severity and serum oxygen radical activity (ORA) and total antioxidation capacity (TAC) in critically ill surgical patients with sepsis. ⋯ Serum TAC level may be a useful biomarker to predict severity of critically ill surgical patients with sepsis.

To investigate microorganisms causing central venous catheter contamination and how this contamination differs across different catheter metrics. ⋯ This study found a high incidence of central access catheter hub bacterial contamination, which correlated with positive blood cultures in 2 of 3 total bacteremia cases identified in the 45 patients.
