Serum glial fibrillary acidic protein and ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1 for diagnosis of sepsis-associated encephalopathy and outcome prognostication.
We investigated the role of serum Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) and Ubiquitin C-Terminal Hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1) in diagnosis of sepsis-associated encephalopathy(SAE), predicting prognosis and long-term quality of life with patients of sepsis. ⋯ Serum concentrations GFAP and UCH-L1 early elevated and associated with sepsis-associated encephalopathy, poor prognosis and quality of life.

Observational StudyOpportunities for achieving resuscitation goals during the inter-emergency department transfer of severe sepsis patients by emergency medical services: A case series.
This study aimed to describe the care provide by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to severe sepsis patients being transferred between acute care hospitals and identify how that care contributes to sepsis care goals. ⋯ EMS sepsis care during transfer was limited. EMS crews primarily continued treatments previously initiated and did not take additional steps toward resuscitation targets. Data suggests the inter-emergency department transfer period may provide an opportunity to continue working toward treatment targets, though the time is currently underutilized.

Review Meta AnalysisEffects of post-ICU follow-up on subject outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize data on subject outcomes associated with post-ICU follow-up. ⋯ Post-ICU follow-up may improve depression symptoms and mental health-related quality of life in the short term for models focusing on physical therapy and PTSD symptoms in the medium term for models focusing on psychological or medical management interventions.

Review Meta AnalysisConstipation, diarrhea, and prophylactic laxative bowel regimens in the critically ill: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Prophylactic laxative bowel regimens may prevent constipation in enterally-fed critically ill patients. However, their use may also increase diarrhea. We performed a systematic review to: 1. Explore the epidemiology of constipation and/or diarrhea in critically ill patients; and 2. Appraise trials evaluating prophylactic laxative bowel regimens. ⋯ Constipation and diarrhea occur frequently in the critically ill but data evaluating prophylactic laxative bowel regimens in such patients are sparse and do not support their use.
