With advances in critical care and organ donation, diagnosis of brain death is gaining importance. We aimed to assess potential brain death confounders from the literature, elucidating clinical presentation and diagnostic approaches in these cases. ⋯ Brain death confounders are infrequently reported and formal studies are lacking. Mainly younger patients with polyneuritis and intoxications are described. As outcome, especially in the latter, is often favourable, high awareness and strict adherence to guidelines is crucial. The importance of identifying pathologies compatible with extensive and irreversible brain damage before proceeding to diagnostic tests should be emphasized.

ReviewRisk related therapy in meta-analyses of critical care interventions: Bayesian meta-regression analysis.
The relationship between treatment efficacy and patient risk is explored in a series of meta-analyses from the critical care domain, focusing on mortality outcome. ⋯ Underlying risk-related therapy is apparent in meta-analyses of the critically-ill and identification is of importance to both the conduct and interpretation of these meta-analyses.

Risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation on the general adult ICU: A systematic review.
This study was performed to systematically review the available evidence for the risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) on the general adult intensive care unit (ICU) and provide a semi-quantitative evidence synthesis. ⋯ We provide the first systematic review with evidence synthesis of risk factors for NOAF on the general adult ICU. Evidence for modifiable risk factors was limited. Further research is therefore required and may contribute towards the evidence-based prevention and management of this important condition.

Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: A systematic review of selection criteria, outcome measures and definitions of complications.
The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate the reporting of selection criteria and outcome measures, and to examine definitions of complications used in venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation studies (V-A ECMO). ⋯ This systematic review provides clinicians with the most commonly reported selection criteria, outcome measures and complications used in ECMO practice. However non-standardized definitions and inconsistent reporting limits their ability to inform practice. New consensus driven definitions of complications and patient centred outcomes are urgently needed.

Review Meta AnalysisEffects of post-ICU follow-up on subject outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize data on subject outcomes associated with post-ICU follow-up. ⋯ Post-ICU follow-up may improve depression symptoms and mental health-related quality of life in the short term for models focusing on physical therapy and PTSD symptoms in the medium term for models focusing on psychological or medical management interventions.
