The Relative Citation Ratio: Examining a Novel Measure of Research Productivity among Southern Academic Ophthalmologists.
PurposeTo analyze research productivity, as assessed by the National Institutes of Health-supported relative citation ratio (RCR), for a cohort of Southern academic ophthalmologists. DesignA descriptive and cross-sectional design was used. Data on gender, academic rank (assigned as an assistant professor, associate professor, professor, or "other"), degrees, and career duration were collected using online resources. ⋯ Males had significantly higher mean and weighted RCR than females. ConclusionsAcademic rank and attainment of a PhD degree were correlated with increased research productivity. When analyses focused exclusively on faculty not in the "other" subgroup, male gender, and lengthier career were associated with increased mean and weighted RCR, the former of which potentially highlights differences in professional advancement between genders.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Retinal Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
Ophthalmology has been at the forefront of medical specialties adopting artificial intelligence. This is primarily due to the "image-centric" nature of the field. ⋯ Finally, we address some of the challenges and limitations that might affect the incorporation of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology. These limitations mainly revolve around the quality and accuracy of datasets used in the algorithms and their generalizability, false negatives, and the cultural challenges around the adoption of the technology.

Ophthalmology Residency Match in the Covid-19 Era: Applicant and Program Director Perceptions of the 2020-2021 Application Cycle.
Objective: To evaluate the experiences and preferences of ophthalmology residency applicants and program directors (PDs), with emphasis on the effect of COVID-19 as well as recent changes on the application process. Design: Cross-sectional, online surveyParticipants: All applicants to the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute ophthalmology residency program, and all United States ophthalmology residency PDs, during the 2020-2021 application cycle. Methods: An online survey was distributed to applicants and program directors of the 2020-2021 ophthalmology residency application cycle. ⋯ Conclusions: The ophthalmology residency application process was especially complex during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although many applicants and PDs were glad that interviews were held virtually this year, they were less certain regarding future years. The virtual format led to a significantly lower financial burden for applicants and may lead some to prefer this format in the future; if a hybrid model is offered for virtual/in-person interviews, these two interview modes should be compared equally.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a devastating impact on patient lives. COVID-19 impacts the respiratory system and this leads to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which increases the likelihood of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. ⋯ This article presents an overview of sight-impairing ophthalmic conditions seen in COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU admissions. The article provides a brief commentary on the clinical signs and examinations that intensive care nurses and doctors have to be vigilant of before escalating the patient care to the Ophthalmic team.

Telemedicine is the provision of healthcare-related services from a distance and is poised to move healthcare from the physician's office back into the patient's home. The field of ophthalmology is often at the forefront of technological advances in medicine including telemedicine and the use of artificial intelligence. ⋯ This review describes the current status of tele-ophthalmology in the United States including benefits, hurdles, current programs, technology, and developments in artificial intelligence. With ongoing advances patients may benefit from improved detection and earlier treatment of eye diseases, resulting in better care and improved visual outcomes.
