Meta AnalysisEfficacy and safety of tapentadol prolonged release for chronic osteoarthritis pain and low back pain.
This pooled analysis of data from three phase 3 studies in patients with chronic osteoarthritis knee or low back pain evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of tapentadol prolonged release (PR; 100-250 mg twice daily) compared with placebo and oxycodone hydrochloride (HCl) controlled release (CR; 20-50 mg twice daily). ⋯ Tapentadol PR (100-250 mg twice daily) was efficacious and provided efficacy that was similar to oxycodone HCl CR (20-50 mg twice daily) for the management of chronic osteoarthritis knee and low back pain, with a superior gastrointestinal tolerability profile and fewer treatment discontinuations.

Malignant pleural effusions are a common clinical problem in patients with primary thoracic malignancy and metastatic malignancy to the thorax. Symptoms can be debilitating and can impair tolerance of anticancer therapy. This article presents a comprehensive review of pharmaceutical and nonpharmaceutical approaches to the management of malignant pleural effusion, and a novel algorithm for management based on patients' performance status.

Controlled Clinical TrialFlavocoxid, an anti-inflammatory agent of botanical origin, does not affect coagulation or interact with anticoagulation therapies.
Flavocoxid, a botanical, anti-inflammatory agent, nonspecifically inhibits the peroxidase activity of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX). Due to the concomitant use of aspirin or warfarin in many osteoarthritis (OA) patients with increased cardiovascular risk, we felt it necessary to assess the anticoagulation properties of flavocoxid. ⋯ These results suggest that flavocoxid does not affect the primary or extrinsic pathways of secondary hemostasis and, by not inhibiting the anticoagulation effects of aspirin, may have utility in cardiovascular patients with OA.
