Over the last 40 years, a significant advance has been made in the treatment of childhood and adult cancers. However, the increase of the survival rate points out medium- and long-term adverse effects that constitute a serious limitation for the quality of life in adults survived from a childhood cancer. ⋯ Anthracycline toxicity is generally limited to the myocardium, while radiation can cause injury to all components of the heart. The purpose of this review is to discuss the mechanisms of action of anthracyclines, their cardiotoxicity, the feasibility of screening, and the prevention of cardiac damage after treatment in childhood.

Case ReportsAnaphylactoid reaction to high-dose methotrexate and re-administration after a successful desensitization.
Methotrexate (MTX) is an antimetabolite with a major role in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). The authors report the management of a 9-year-old boy who developed an anaphylactoid reaction to high-dose MTX infusion, after a first challenge with intrathecal administration, during induction therapy for ALL. A desensitization protocol was followed and MTX tolerance has been successfully achieved, allowing this patient to complete the needed chemotherapy.

Case ReportsLinezolid-induced reversible bicytopenia in a 4-year-old boy with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.
The authors report on a 4-year-old child with the diagnosis of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and infective endocarditis. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was isolated from the blood culture of the patient. While receiving imipenem, amikacin, and linezolid therapies, the boy's general condition improved, acute phase reactants decreased, and his blood culture became negative for MRSA. ⋯ Six days following termination of linezolid therapy, his hemoglobin had increased to 8.2 g/dL and platelet count to 192 x 10(9)/L. Thus, it should be kept in mind that linezolid may induce cytopenias in children. If these side effects of linezolid are known, unnecessary laboratory investigations may be prevented and cessation of the drug may be sufficient for reversal of the cytopenias.

Consensus on a core curriculum in American training programs in pediatric hematology-oncology: a report from the ASPHO Training Committee.
The Training Committee (TC) of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology created a foundation of common goals and objectives that could provide a structure for fellowship programs. The TC conducted a survey of program directors for input into the structure of their programs and training methods and the results are presented here. ⋯ This paper highlights the suggested training objectives and educational opportunities that should be afforded all fellows in this sub-specialty. The goal of this consensus statement is to provide a model curriculum to improve quality and consistency of training and achieve compliance with new requirements while simultaneously recognizing the importance of alternative approaches that emphasize each program's unique strengths and character.
