Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
A novel hydroxyethyl starch (Voluven) for effective perioperative plasma volume substitution in cardiac surgery.
To compare the new hydroxyethyl starch HES 130/0.4 (Voluven) and the standard HES 200/0.5 (pentastarch) regarding effectiveness for plasma volume substitution and safety of large volumes in heart surgery. ⋯ Hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 is an effective plasma volume expander in heart surgery and may be used as the sole artificial colloid to cover the perioperative period. We found a reduced influence of HES 130/0.4 on the physiologic postoperative increase of vWF.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Postoperative pain management in patients undergoing major surgery after remifentanil vs. fentanyl anesthesia. Multicentre Investigator Group.
To determine if morphine sulphate was an effective transition analgesic in patients receiving a remifentanil-based anesthetic regimen. ⋯ Morphine sulphate regimens of 0.15 or 0.20 mg x kg(-1) administered 30 min before the end of surgery are equally effective transition regimens for inpatient procedures.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial
A multicentre trial of ropivacaine 7.5 mg x ml(-1) vs bupivacaine 5 mg x ml(-1) for supra clavicular brachial plexus anesthesia.
To compare the efficacy of ropivacaine 7.5 mg x ml(-1) with bupivacaine 5.0 mg x ml(-1) for subclavian perivascular brachial plexus block. ⋯ Thirty ml ropivacaine 7.5 mg x ml(-1) (225 mg) produced effective and well tolerated brachial plexus block of long duration by the subclavian perivascular route. In this study, the results were similar to those of 30 ml bupivacaine 5.0 mg x ml(-1).

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Double-blind comparison of epidural ropivacaine 0.25% and bupivacaine 0.25%, for the relief of childbirth pain.
To evaluate the efficacy of ropivacaine 0.25% when administered epidurally for relief of labour pain and to compare it with bupivacaine 0.25%. ⋯ Ropivacaine 0.25%, when administered epidurally by intermittent top-ups for labour analgesia, was equally efficacious as bupivacaine 0.25%.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
Intravenous dolasetron mesilate ameliorates postoperative nausea and vomiting.
To compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of dolasetron mesilate with placebo for the treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). ⋯ Single doses of dolasetron mesilate iv, given after the first episode of PONV, were both effective and safe in this adult patient population.
