Significance of Serology by Multi-Antigen ELISA for Tissue Helminthiases in Korea.
It is clinically important to differentiate tissue-invading helminthiasis. The purpose of this study was to assess the specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody positive rates for clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis, cysticercosis, and sparganosis 4 helminthiases from 1996 to 2006 using multi-antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in Korea. Results of 6,017 samples, which were referred to our institute for serodiagnosis, were analyzed. ⋯ Paragonimiasis was highly correlated as 81.8% (9/11), cysticercosis 29.9% (20/67), clonorchiasis 29.0% (20/69), and sparganosis 11.1% (2/18). In conclusion, the multi-antigen ELISA using 4 helminth antigens is useful to differentiate suspected tissue-invading helminthiases, especially ELISA diagnosis of paragonimiasis is reliable. The seropositivity is still high among suspected patients in Korea.

Effects of Mental Health Support on the Grief of Bereaved People Caused by Sewol Ferry Accident.
Few studies have assessed the overall effects of multi-centered, complicated mental health support on the grief process. This study investigated the broader influence of mental health support provided practically to the bereaved family on the severity of complicated grief. Ninety-three bereaved family members of the Sewol ferry accident were recruited. ⋯ There was no significant correlation between the ICG score and other variables except for subjective health status measured 1 month after the disaster (P = 0.005). There was no significant difference in PCL-5 (P = 0.140) and PHQ-9 scores (P = 0.603) among groups, respectively. In conclusion, mental health support significantly reduced the severity of grief only in those participants who had not received any psychotherapy or psychiatry clinic service before the accident.

Subcutaneous Immunotherapy for Allergic Asthma in a Single Center of Korea: Efficacy, Safety, and Clinical Response Predictors.
Allergen-specific immunotherapy is the only causal treatment for allergic diseases. However, the efficacy of immunotherapy may vary around the world due to differences in climate, the nature of aero-allergens and their distribution. The aim of this study was to describe the effects of subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) in Korean adults with allergic asthma (AA). ⋯ In 284 patients on SCIT with HDM alone, initial specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae did not show significant difference between remission and non-remission group after adjusting demographic variables. In conclusion, SCIT was effective and safe treatment modality for patients with AA. Initial FEV1 ≥ 80% and immunotherapy more than 3 years were found to be associated with favorable clinical responses to SCIT.

Korean Patients Undergoing Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation for Alcoholic Liver Disease Have Non-Inferior Survival Outcomes than for Hepatitis B Virus: a Real-World Experience without Minimum Abstinence before Transplantation.
Few studies have compared outcomes in patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in Asian countries in which living donor LT (LDLT) is dominant, where HBV is endemic and where there are no strict regulations on pre-transplant abstinence for ALD. This study compared post-LT outcomes of deceased donor LT (DDLT) in patients with ALD and HBV. Data from 220 patients who underwent primary DDLT at Seoul National University Hospital from January 2010 to December 2014, including 107 with HBV and 38 with ALD, were retrospectively analyzed. ⋯ There were no significant differences in their 1-year (90.7% vs. 92.1%) and 3-year (82.1% vs. 82.3%) overall survival rates (P = 1.000). Multivariate analysis showed that high serum gamma glutamyltransferase concentration (≥ 70 IU/L) was independently prognostic of 1-year post-LT overall survival. Survival outcomes following DDLT were similar in Korean patients with ALD and HBV, even in the absence of strict pre-transplant abstinence from alcohol as a selection criterion.
