Review Meta AnalysisThe Combined Effects of Alcohol Consumption and Smoking on Cancer Risk by Exposure Level: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for cancer, and when combined with smoking, the risk increases. Nevertheless, few studies have comprehensively evaluated the combined effects of alcohol consumption and smoking on the risk of various cancer types. Therefore, to assess these effects, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ Our study provided a comprehensive summary of the combined effects of alcohol consumption and smoking on cancers. As their consumption increased, the synergy effect became more pronounced, and the synergy effect was evident especially for head and neck cancer. These findings provide additional evidence for the combined effect of alcohol and smoking in alcohol guidelines for cancer prevention.

Meta AnalysisChromosomal Microarray Analysis in Fetuses With Ultrasonographic Soft Markers: A Meta-Analysis of the Current Evidence.
Ultrasonographic soft markers are normal variants, rather than fetal abnormalities, and guidelines recommend a detailed survey of fetal anatomy to determine the necessity of antenatal karyotyping. Anecdotal reports have described cases with ultrasonographic soft markers in which chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) revealed pathogenic copy number variants (CNVs) despite normal results on conventional karyotyping, but CMA for ultrasonographic soft markers remains a matter of debate. In this systematic review, we evaluated the clinical significance of CMA for pregnancies with isolated ultrasonographic soft markers and a normal fetal karyotype. ⋯ CMA could aid in risk assessment and pregnancy counseling in pregnancies where the fetus has isolated ultrasonographic soft markers along with a normal karyotype.

Review Meta AnalysisCauses for Retraction in the Biomedical Literature: A Systematic Review of Studies of Retraction Notices.
Many studies have evaluated the prevalence of different reasons for retraction in samples of retraction notices. We aimed to perform a systematic review of such empirical studies of retraction causes. ⋯ Misconduct seems to be the most frequently recorded reason for retraction across empirical analyses of retraction notices, but other reasons are not negligible. Greater specificity of causes and standardization is needed in retraction notices.

Meta AnalysisCirculating Vitamin D Level and Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death and Cardiovascular Mortality: A Dose-Response Meta-Analysis of Prospective Studies.
We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies to analyze the effect of circulating vitamin D level on the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. ⋯ Our meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies showed that lower circulating vitamin D level significantly increased the risk of SCD and CVD mortality.

Meta AnalysisInfluence of Biogenetic Explanations of Mental Disorders on Stigma and Help-Seeking Behavior: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Biogenetic causal explanations of mental disorders are commonly used for public education and campaigns. However, the influence of biogenetic explanations on the ideas about and attitudes toward mental illness is unclear. We examined the influence of biogenetic explanations on attitudes toward mental disorders using a meta-analytic method accompanied by subgroup analyses. ⋯ Having a biogenetic concept of the cause of mental disorders was related with a positive attitude toward help-seeking, particularly in the general population and individuals living in Eastern countries. Providing a biogenetic explanation decreased blame toward individuals with mental illness but was associated with increased perceived dangerousness and prognostic pessimism. Therefore, although a biogenetic explanation promotes public use of mental health services, it should be carefully applied to avoid an increase in negative thoughts, such as that mental illness is biologically irreversible and untreatable.
