Seroprevalence of respiratory syncytial virus IgG among healthy young adults in basic training for the Republic of Korea Air Force.
This investigation enrolled 570 healthy young males gathered from all over the country for military service at the Republic of Korea Air Force boot camp. It confirmed RSV IgG seroprevalence by utilizing the enzyme immunoassay method just prior to undergoing basic training. The mean age of this study was 20.25 ± 1.34 yr old. ⋯ It was confirmed that RSV is a common respiratory virus and RSV infection was encountered by almost all people before reaching adulthood in Korea. Nine basic trainees belonging to the RSV IgG negative and equivocal grey zone categories were prospectively observed for any particular vulnerability to respiratory infection during the training period of two months. However, these nine men completed their basic training without developing any specific respiratory illness.

Multicenter StudyRisk factors for death during pulmonary tuberculosis treatment in Korea: a multicenter retrospective cohort study.
The data regarding risk factors for death during tuberculosis (TB) treatment are inconsistent, and few studies examined this issue in Korea. The purpose of this study was to evaluate baseline prognostic factors for death during treatment of adult patients with pulmonary TB in Korea. A multicenter retrospective cohort study of 2,481 patients who received TB treatment at eight hospitals from January 2009 to December 2010 was performed. ⋯ Unsuccessful treatment included death (85, 3.4%) and treatment failure (63, 2.5%) occurred in 148 patients (6.0%). In multivariate analysis, male sex, anemia, dyspnea, chronic heart disease, malignancy, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission were significant risk factors for death during TB treatment. Therefore, male sex, anemia, dyspnea, chronic heart disease, malignancy, and ICU admission could be baseline prognostic factors for death during treatment of adult patients with pulmonary TB in Korea.

Multicenter StudyA prospective Korean multicenter study for infectious complications in patients undergoing prostate surgery: risk factors and efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis.
This multicenter study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis and identify the risk factors for infectious complications after prostate surgery in Korean patients. A total of 424 patients who underwent surgery of the prostate were reviewed. All patients underwent urinalysis and urine culture preoperatively and postoperatively. ⋯ Factors independently associated with infectious complications were diabetes mellitus (adjusted OR, 1.99; 95% CI, 1.09-3.65, P=0.025) and operation time (adjusted OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.03-1.13, P=0.004). Clinicians should be aware of the high risk of infectious complications in patients with diabetes and those who undergo a prolonged operation time. Neither the type nor duration of prophylactic antibiotics resulted in differences in infectious complications.

Multicenter StudyDiagnostic imaging utilization in cases of acute appendicitis: multi-center experience.
The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to measure imaging utilization rates and the negative appendectomy rate (NAR) in metropolitan Seoul, Korea. The study included 2321 adolescents and adults (≥ 15 yr; median [interquartile range] age, 37 [27-50] yr; 46.7% female) undergoing appendectomy in 2011 at eight tertiary and three secondary hospitals. Imaging utilization rate was 99.7% (95% confidence interval, 99.4%-99.9%). ⋯ The use of ultrasonography instead of CT as the initial imaging modality was significantly associated with higher NAR (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 2.28 [1.22-4.27]; risk difference, 4.4 [0-8.8] percentage points), however, the population attributable risk was 0.3 [0-0.6] percentage points. We observed a very high CT utilization rate and a low NAR in metropolitan Seoul. Although the use of CT was significantly associated with the lower NAR, CT utilization rate already has reached the level that increase in CT utilization from the status quo would hardly decrease the NAR further.

Randomized Controlled TrialBenefits of a continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) technique with one icodextrin-containing and two biocompatible glucose-containing dialysates for preservation of residual renal function and biocompatibility in incident CAPD patients.
In a prospective randomized controlled study, the efficacy and safety of a continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) technique has been evaluated using one icodextrin-containing and two glucose-containing dialysates a day. Eighty incident CAPD patients were randomized to two groups; GLU group continuously using four glucose-containing dialysates (n=39) and ICO group using one icodextrin-containing and two glucose-containing dialysates (n=41). Variables related to residual renal function (RRF), metabolic and fluid control, dialysis adequacy, and dialysate effluent cancer antigen 125 (CA125) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels were measured. ⋯ The dialysate CA125 and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in the ICO group than the GLU group. Dialysis adequacy, β2-microglobulin clearance and blood pressure did not differ between the two groups. The CAPD technique using one icodextrin-containing and two glucose-containing dialysates tends to better preserve RRF and is more biocompatible, with similar dialysis adequacy compared to that using four glucose-containing dialysates in incident CAPD patients.
