Global Phase 3 programme of vadadustat for treatment of anaemia of chronic kidney disease: rationale, study design and baseline characteristics of dialysis-dependent patients in the INNO2VATE trials.
Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) are currently the mainstay of treatment for anaemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Vadadustat is an investigational oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl-hydroxylase inhibitor that stimulates endogenous erythropoietin formation. The INNO2VATE programme comprises two studies designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of vadadustat versus the ESA darbepoetin alfa in ameliorating anaemia in patients with dialysis-dependent CKD (DD-CKD). Here we describe the trial design along with patient demographics and baseline characteristics. ⋯ The two INNO2VATE trials will provide important information on the safety and efficacy of a novel approach for anaemia management in a diverse DD-CKD population. Demographics and baseline characteristics of enrolled patients suggest that study results will be representative for a large proportion of the DD-CKD population.

Observational StudyFractures and their sequelae in non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease: the Stockholm CREAtinine Measurement project.
People undergoing maintenance dialysis are at high risk for fractures, but less is known about fracture incidence and associated outcomes in earlier stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). ⋯ Our findings highlight the commonness of fractures and the increased risk for subsequent adverse outcomes in CKD patients. These results may inform clinical decisions regarding post-fracture clinical surveillance and fracture prevention strategies.

Short- and long-term outcomes after incident pneumonia in adults with chronic kidney disease: a time-dependent analysis from the Stockholm CREAtinine Measurement project.
Little is known about the health sequelae of pneumonia in persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD). ⋯ Incident pneumonia was associated with increased risks of MACE, CKD progression, severe UTI/sepsis and death, with risks highest soon after pneumonia diagnosis but extending beyond 90 days. Our findings highlight the susceptibility for adverse outcomes of CKD patients following pneumonia diagnosis, and may inform clinical decisions regarding vaccination strategies.

COVID-19-related mortality in kidney transplant and dialysis patients: results of the ERACODA collaboration.
Patients on kidney replacement therapy comprise a vulnerable population and may be at increased risk of death from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Currently, only limited data are available on outcomes in this patient population. ⋯ The 28-day case-fatality rate is high in patients on kidney replacement therapy with COVID-19 and is primarily driven by the risk factors age and frailty. Furthermore, in the first year after kidney transplantation, patients may be at increased risk of COVID-19-related mortality as compared with dialysis patients on the waiting list for transplantation. This information is important in guiding clinical decision-making, and for informing the public and healthcare authorities on the COVID-19-related mortality risk in kidney transplant and dialysis patients.
