Increased urinary miR-196a level predicts the progression of renal injury in patients with diabetic nephropathy.
Recent data suggest that miR-196a is predominantly expressed in the kidney and plays an inhibitory role in the progress of renal interstitial fibrosis (IF). However, the predictive value of miR-196a in diabetic nephropathy (DN) remains unknown. We validated the role of urinary miR-196a in the progression of renal injury in a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. ⋯ Increased urinary miR-196a was significantly associated with the progression of renal injury and might be a noninvasive prognostic marker of renal fibrosis in DN patients.

Prognostic value of hypochloremia versus hyponatremia among patients with chronic kidney disease-a retrospective cohort study.
Serum chloride (Cl) levels confer better prognostic value than serum sodium (Na) levels among patients with heart failure. Little is known about the relationship between serum Cl levels and clinical outcomes among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). ⋯ Lower serum Cl levels are an independent predictor of death and cardiovascular events. The incremental prognostic value of Cl was superior to that of Na in patients with CKD.

Quantitative assessment of renal structural and functional changes in chronic kidney disease using multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging.
Multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides the potential for a more comprehensive non-invasive assessment of organ structure and function than individual MRI measures, but has not previously been comprehensively evaluated in chronic kidney disease (CKD). ⋯ Comprehensive multi-parametric MRI is reproducible and correlates well with available measures of renal function and pathology. Larger longitudinal studies are warranted to evaluate its potential to stratify prognosis and response to therapy in CKD.
