Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffects of ferrous sulphate and non-ionic iron-polymaltose complex on markers of oxidative tissue damage in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Iron deficiency is a common complication of inflammatory bowel disease. Oral iron therapy may reinforce intestinal tissue injury by catalyzing production of reactive oxygen species. ⋯ Ferrous sulphate increased plasma malondialdehyde, a marker of lipid peroxidation. Comparing treatment with ferrous sulphate and iron-polymaltose complex, changes in plasma malondialdehyde tended to differ. Clinical disease activity was unchanged after both treatments.

Randomized Controlled TrialInfluence of ghrelin on gastric emptying and meal-related symptoms in idiopathic gastroparesis.
Ghrelin, the endogenous ligand of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, is released from the stomach. Animal studies suggest that ghrelin stimulates gastrointestinal motor activity. ⋯ In idiopathic gastroparesis, administration of ghrelin enhances gastric emptying and improves meal-related symptoms. These observations suggest a potential for ghrelin receptor agonists in the treatment of gastroparesis.

Comparative StudyAerophagia in adults: a comparison with functional dyspepsia.
Aerophagia is a functional upper gastrointestinal disorder that has not previously been well described in a large patient group. ⋯ Individuals with aerophagia experience prolonged upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Initial presenting symptoms appear to be distinctly different from those who have functional dyspepsia.

Comparative StudyEvaluation of the Ez-HBT Helicobacter blood test to establish Helicobacter pylori eradication.
The urea blood test (Ez-HBT) has been shown to compare favourably with the urea breath test in the diagnosis of active Helicobacter pylori infection. ⋯ The performance characteristics of the Ez-HBT Helicobacter blood test are comparable with that of 13C-urea breath test in establishing H. pylori eradication after therapy. Errors related to incomplete fasting can be mitigated by collection of a basal blood sample.

Multicenter StudyCoeliac disease case finding and diet monitoring by point-of-care testing.
Immunoglobulin A class transglutaminase autoantibodies are highly predictive markers of active coeliac disease, a disorder difficult to recognize solely on clinical grounds. ⋯ Point-of-care testing was accurate in finding new coeliac cases and helped to identify and decrease dietary non-compliance.
