A Choosing Wisely top-5 list to support general practitioners in Austria.
From a pool of 147 reliable recommendations, ten experts from the Austrian Society of General Practice and Family Medicine selected 21 relevant recommendations as the basis for the Delphi process. In two Delphi rounds, eleven experts established a top‑5 list of recommendations designed for Austrian family practice to reduce medical overuse. ⋯ A subsequent survey identified the reasons for selecting these top‑5 recommendations: the frequency of the issue, potential harms, costs, and patients' expectations. Experts hope the campaign will save time in educating patients and provide legal protection for omitting measures.

[Personal health data in times of a pandemic-legal and ethical aspects].
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has repeatedly been argued that the protection of (public) health should at any rate take precedence over data protection. This argument is bold and clear, but it is neither ethically nor legally correct. ⋯ This article gives three examples-certificates for members of risk groups, tracking apps and immunity certificates-to discuss some of the ethical and legal considerations to be taken into account. The authors aspire to illustrate that even in a pandemic, the balancing of arguments and the need for a proportionality of measures taken must never be forgotten.

Review[Modern thyroid surgery - the surgeon's endocrine-surgical understanding and his responsibility for the extent of surgery and complication rate].
High quality thyroid surgery implies a surgeon with an endocrine-surgical understanding aiming at best possible outcome. This includes an appropriate extent of the resection and a low rate of complications. It is important that the surgeon is involved at an early stage being part of the decision process for or against partial or total thyroidectomy. ⋯ Nowadays, permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and postoperative hemorrhage rarely occur due to subtle surgical techniques. Extracervical surgical access to the thyroid is still a matter of clinical trials and should be restricted to centers. Radiofrequency ablation is an alternative method for benign lesions or hyperfunctioning nodules in patients with high surgical risk.
