Lifelong learning is essential in today's work world, with the rapid explosion of knowledge and technology. Busy nurses find the challenge overwhelming to keep pace with current practice. Journal clubs work within inpatient settings but not for ambulatory nurses where the pace is much different. ⋯ The traveling journal club idea was adopted by the inpatient units that face similar issues with time and patient needs. The traveling journal club was a success in the setting originally planned and extended to other areas.

More than 90 million Americans have low levels of health literacy that may contribute to poor health outcomes. Assessment of the readability of patient education materials (PEMs) is a vital component of health education. ⋯ Nurses must expand their knowledge of all aspects of literacy and readability and take a proactive role in assessment and development of PEMs. Further research is needed to determine the best readability measures.
